I caught a big otter in a coon trap two years ago. We have no season on them here yet, so he needed to be released. I called a Game and Parks biologist friend of mine to help me. That was one of the most vicious critters that I have ever seen. Teeth from hell and twenty places at once. They are amazingly tough. We got him released, but it was a rodeo!

So I typed in otter gun in bing and the first thing that came up was this. I'm horrifide. What ever your carry gun is going to be for otter it had better be good.

Otters are cute and wonderful to watch but they are the second largest of the mustella species, only a little smaller than wolverine and much like pine marten and weasels in their ability to skillfully hunt and kill. Not really made for speed on land but they can move surprisingly fast.

I'm careful to stay a good distance from the adults. We enjoy seeing River Otter by our cabin but I suspect an otter took three of the four young from my dipper nest box in 2012.

I had an interesting day fishing a couple years ago when a mom and its young drifted into the side channel I was fishing. Lots and lots of communication between mom and young when they got separated with me in between. For a bit I was wondering if I was going to combat with my 5 fwt vs. mom. Luckily for all, cooler heads prevailed.
