Newest US Senate Land Sale Amendment

I don't have a good feeling about it for the simple reason that just about every time I have thought I understood or could predict how something was going to play out in politics...surprise, wrong again.

Randy, are there actionable steps we can be taking at this phase of the ballgame or is it a matter of letting the cards play out at this stage?

The texts I am getting about who is/isn't in favor of many different possible procedures to kill this is mind boggling. I thought I understood the processes, the protocols, and how stuff gets moved along, but today has me wondering if I even passed 9th grade civics.

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't have a good feeling about how Thune is going to let this play out in the Senate. If it has to go a certain way under some of the obscure Senate rules Lee is asking Thune to invoke, the MT/ID Senators are not going to have the votes to strike it.

If you are like me and always hedging your position, you might want to make sure you've been calling your House Reps.
I presume they are going to force a vote on an amendment to strike the land sale section (after the vote to proceed so amendments can be offered) and we should easily have the votes to strike it...but maybe it's not that straight forward?

At this time, I think the calls that have been made are what is going to sway this. The votes have been counted and Lee is trying to use a process that would require 60 votes to approve changes or stop filibuster on amendments to the BBB that seems to have passed the Byrd Rule. Like I said, I don't quite understand it but we're all trying to rally more Rs to at least let an amendment come forth in the event Thune follows the path Lee is requesting.

If so, the Rs in the Senate are going to need more allies from their own party other than just MT/ID Senators.

A podcast about the bill had public lands has had an impact ,but the voting on loss of heathcare was bigger.
Are Senators willing to throw their voters under the bus.
When asked abouth this loss McConnell of K just said "Well, I guess they'll have to figure something out". Meaning his voters are on their own.

I fear Congress is more worried about losing the bribe $ from tax breaks for those donors than their own citizens.

Randy I just read that Sheehy stated after talking to leadership the threshold to pass his amendment was set at 51. He also said he would vote to proceed to the vote. Anything to this? Maybe he changed his mind to allow vote knowing his amendment would take 51.

Trump has said he doesn’t support selling public lands…I feel like if that were true this thing would be squashed in no time. The fact it hasn’t speaks volumes
Trump says a lot of things contridicting himself or the facts. All I know is the guy he put in charge as Sec of Interior helped Lee come up with this plan. He’s fine with it or this thread wouldn’t be 50+ pages.

You are correct on Burgum. These are just assets on the balance sheet he manages or so that’s what he says. I expect we will be seeing land disposals to the maximum extent practical under his leadership but at least he will have to follow FLPMA and FLTFA and he is in the process of firing as many employees as he can so that isn’t going to help him get much done either. Luckily he is just too dumb to realize that at this point.

That’s the hope. But, with Lee being a Chairman with seniority, nobody is taking any chances.

In the last hour, my opinion on this outcome has changed, even if Thune does grant Lee a 60 vote path. The number of people with connections to other Senators who are making calls and making great progress is astounding. Add in the general dislike of Lee and the fact that even Senators from outside the 11 states on Lee’s sales list have been swamped with calls, and I think the votes are there to strike it no matter the route granted to Lee.

Quite stunning to see how many people are working on it, especially when you consider it is a beautiful summer Saturday evening. The industry/NGO letter is what has swung a few of the fence sitters.

Fingers crossed that this doesn’t get out of the Senate.

Affordable housing is a load of bullshit to make it sound good.
Let’s look at what happen around Las Vegas in 1998…

The Southern Nevada Public Land Management Act (SNPLMA) allowed the federal government to sell large areas of public land around Las Vegas, with the money going to conservation and local projects. Most of that land was turned into big master-planned communities like Inspirada, Mountain’s Edge, Southern Highlands, and Skye Canyon. These neighborhoods are full of market-rate single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments aimed at middle- and higher-income buyers. While this development added a lot of new housing, it wasn’t set aside or priced specifically as affordable housing, and there’s no requirement in the law to make sure it is.

Is Lee just hoping there bluffing in the house at this point? I’m also curious Randy. How do they get it out of the house is it a vote to kill the sale or does Johnson and Thune agree to just get rid of the language.
