My new hunting buddy...Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. His name is Briar. He already runs the show and loves his duck toy.

You haven't really hunted birds till you've hunted with an ugly dog.

Looks like you got a winner.

Have you heard of the versatile dogs website?

Very nice! Living in a place where I can justify a bird dog is a dream of mine. Good luck with the training and please keep us updated on his progress.

You are in for some good times. My GWP is a year old now and I am thinking his second season should be quite fun. Good luck with the training.

oh boy has it been an interested last few days. It has been a long time since I had a puppy and I don't remember them being so much work. We're working on crate training which means lots of howling. This morning will be the longest he's ever been alone.

I joined the versatile dog forum the other day to get the scoop from those guys.

Whatever you do, dont give up on the crate training! It is a tough few weeks, but it sure makes life easier for the next decade. My 1 year old now goes straight to the crate without being asked whenever he sees it. I still have him sleep in the crate in the house every night. When loading up in the back of the truck he jumps up and goes right in.

Ditto! I doubt I'll ever not crate train a house dog. One trick with puppies that sometimes, sorta works is to put an old school type alarm clock near them. The ones that give the audible tick, tock, tick, tock. I've seen it help quite down a noisy pup.

You are the 3rd person to mention the old fashioned alarm clock. I'll see if I can track one down. Someone at work mentioned that they make heartbeat machines for babies and that might work also.

Crate training of WPGs is something new. Most of them sleep in the owner's bed. Never knew they would agree to anything else. Hmmm.

Good looking pup. I agree on the crate training. If we leave the house and forget to put the dog up, we come home and she's in it. It's their safe zone...nobody bothers them there...especially kids.

That's not the first time I've heard that! ;) He went in this evening while I was pretending to ignore him but only for a moment. A little breakthrough but it was something

Nice lookin' pup. Already trained to stay off the furniture :hump:

The Pointer Group of the Missouri Headwaters Gundog Club

will start training Thursday afternoon April 4 (weather permitting) around 5 p.m. near Three Forks, Montana. We have live quail for sale for club members each week. And there are always a couple of "ole hands" there to help give suggestions about how to train. We meet each Th afternoon and I try to be there for most of them.

My pointing black lab ate every meal in his house/car/truck kennel for at least the first year. He lives in it now if need be with very little or no whining.
