Looking for info on regions and specific area to focus on and research for a DIY motnana hunt archery hunt next fall! Any advice is welcome. I have years of experience hunting elk in NE oregon but want to try a new more challenging area. so any and all advice is welcome.

There are 7 regions in MT.

Around 50% of the elk killed every fall are killed in region 3

Other region have bigger bulls, but 3 is a good starting place

thats what the montana fish and wildlife said. what region has the big trophy bulls. I am going to hunt for meat here and hunt for a trophy there.

Big bulls are in the eastern part of the state. The 'meat' bulls are in region 3. If there are any left after the wolves have thier way with them again this winter.

Missouri River Breaks. Pieces of it are in regions 4, 6, and 7. You'll have to draw an elk tag, and then draw a limited entry tag for the Breaks. The units are in the Fort Peck Reservior area.

what is the area like there?steep and rocky? what should I prepare for?

As far as elk country goes, the Breaks are like a city park. Region 3, ha I will let the Montanans describe.

"Breaks Bull".....

Once I burn through my deer combo points, I definitely plan on starting to apply for the deer/elk combo tag with the long hopes of chasing elk in the Breaks. Some seriously cool country IMO. I've only spent 3 days on the north side hunting deer and absolutely get a kick out of that country.

A couple other Breaks Bulls to add to Breaks Runner's pics.

Another look, further up river, just north of where this smaller bull was shot.
