After taking my son and daughter on youth hunts on a local Federal Refuge until they aged out (10-15 year old) I said that I was going to take another youth this year. This is a young men from my church who has never deer hunted and he has only hunted once in his life, and that was for turkey this past spring with his uncle in which he killed a nice long beard!
After seeing his excitment when showing me the pics of his turkey, I asked him if he wanted to go on a youth hunt this fall since my kids can`t go and they had always had a lot of success (both total 10 deer in 7 years on one day hunts)! We have talked about it for a few months and he was extremely excited...well, I was too!
I had a little pressure on me with wanting to put him on some deer to keep him interested. I told him that both my son and daughter usually kills 2 deer at a time when we have doe groups coming in. I talked to him about what he needed to do to accomplish that. Well, after hunting at grand total of about 30 minutes this morning (first deer hunt) four does came out of the thicket and he busted the first, he swung and shot another with my 7mm Mag (A-Bolt)!
Great shooting!
I have more fun taking newbies hunting than going myself, whether they`re 10 or 40. Nothing like it!
BTW, there were 72 kids on this hunt with a total of 3 deer killed, he killed 2 of those! Way too hot, but we just got lucky!
