Lion camp is set [aka- this winter's time with the dogs]

Thanks everyone. We went out again on Saturday and Sunday in our camp. We found two tracks, and could not find them fresh enough to work with.

The lion my daughter killed was north of Winnemucca. We stayed at my in laws for Christmas and went out near their house the day after.

Here are some pics from the last couple days.

Well, I caught one. It was a quick jump which resulted in the dogs fighting the lion on the ground for quite a while before I could get to them.

Not much for pictures as it was quite western.

Another tom. 130lbs or so. It was quite a walk back, so I skinned him on the mountain.

ya don't look like much for trees in that country for him to climb and aways away from the rocks as well.

Great job. I am jealous of the apparent solitude and space to run that you seem to have.

We ran our local area today. Ran into at least three other houndmen running the same ground. Got beat out of the only fresh track we found all day by about half an hour.

All the competition makes a guy question whether the cost and effort is worth it.

Nothing better than hearing the dogs when things are clicking smoothly. Nothing worse than running into guys or wolves around every proverbial corner.

Yeah there is only two other houndsman in my town, and I know them well. One actually came up yesterday to help me after I killed the lion. There are a few people that occasionally hit the country from other towns, but I know there are areas only I have been hunting this year because I keep finding only my tracks in the snow.

The solitude is awesome.

Well, the dogs have mostly healed after two and half weeks. Went out today and found a female with kittens. The tracks were melting out bad, so. No catch.

Back at camp now enjoying the sun set.

Good hunting and great looking hounds. I spent three years near Ely and bobcats were all over the high desert country. Do you run them also or just lions?
Like Gerald, the pressure from wolves and other hunting competition and lack of snow has really reduced my two dogs from running/treeing any cats this season. We have hunted 7/8 mornings since 12/1 and I have only had them cold trail two younger lions and one jumped race for about a mile that they lost in some blowdown timber. The dogs can do it, but I need to find a runnable track first. Good hunting and I really like your camp setup.

Thanks

Bobcats are a pain here. I have only ever caught one, and that was in the desert where the dogs could smoke it. Otherwise the trees are too small and the cats jump a lot. Bobcats never seem comfortable.

Conditions sucked even worse this afternoon then when I first found the track.

Will see what tomorrow brings.

Well, I wanted to finish this thread up.
I ended the season with three lions caught. One was late in the day, which found me walking to a tree well after dark.

I pulled my camp in March. With the shutdown stuff going on and uncertainty, I have not been out much. This is also a pain time of year to hunt due to hard packed snow and rapidly changing daily conditions.

I plan to get out in a couple weeks when the temperature stabilizes.

Have a good one!
