I will be really interesting to see if there is an expo next year. It was originally approved for 5 years, with this year being the 5th. Lots of opposition floating around...does Don Peay still have the pull or the desire?

Yeah, it was a great time for sure. Although I'm glad Buzz didn't get his picture with CB and his painted-on-Wrangler-jeans because no one needs to see that posted here! Nice to catch up with everyone (except Celebrity Fin ;) ) and I'll let you all know about the dandy Henry's or Paunsy tag I draw. :D

Randy, you know that having a booth will make it even harder for us HTers to see you...we'll be waiting in lines for hours to visit you. :D

From the sounds of it, I'd say 100% there is going to be an expo. I predict 250 tags over the next 5 years.

It was great to meet some of you Hunt Talkers at the show. In case you all haven't heard, they announced the great Utah tag give-a-way will continue for 5 more years. The only people in the banquet room that were cheering were the nonresidents. Hope those tags at least go to good folks like you OYOA kinda guys.

Whoops, missed this. Very interesting...

Utah's administrative rules have already been updated to reflect the next five years:

(1) Under the authority of Sections 23-14-18 and 23-14-19 of the Utah Code, this rule provides the standards and requirements for issuing wildlife convention permits.

(2) Wildlife convention permits are authorized by the Wildlife Board and issued by the division to a qualified conservation organization for purposes of generating revenue to fund wildlife conservation activities and attracting a regional or national wildlife convention to Utah.

(3) The selected conservation organization will conduct a random drawing at a convention held in Utah to distribute the opportunity to receive wildlife convention permits.

(4) This rule is intended as authorization to issue one series of wildlife convention permits per year beginning in 2012 through 2016 to one qualified conservation organization.

And the application period for conservation organizations has already passed:

R657-55-4. Obtaining Authority to Distribute Wildlife Convention Permit Series.
(1) The wildlife convention permit series is issued for a period of five years as provided in Section R657-55-1(4).

(2) The wildlife convention permit series is available to eligible conservation organizations for distribution through a drawing or other random selection process held at a wildlife convention in Utah open to the public.

(3) Conservation organizations may apply for the wildlife convention permit series by sending an application to the division between August 1 and September 1, 2010.

I wonder how well this was advertised in advance? I'm surprised we haven't heard more from the detractors....

I am tired of that convention after 5 years of attending. I was looking 'forward' to the tags going away so I could easily blow it off.

I'm not sure if the continuation for 5 years has as much to do with DP clout as it is the UT DWR getting to really like the money!

On a side note, I bet there are over 300 tags in the offering by the end of that five years. I personally think they should include CWMU tags and lots of 'em.

But the DWR only gets the tag fees, same as they would get in the regular draw. They get NOTHING from what is raised at the expo.

That may be the case for monies directly recieved. I know for a fact, that monies generated by various groups using these tags have helped in getting UT DWR projects implemented. Would that money have been made available to them without the expo?

Then again, I don't know everything that goes on within the DWR and don't like all of what I do know and so enjoy taking pot shots at them at times. :D

The biggest problem is that NOBODY knows for sure just where all the expo money goes...there is no transparency.

On the 200 tags, that were robbed from the NR's...they actually get way less revenue because most of the 200 are drawn by utard residents.

I'll bet a beer to anyone willing to take the bet that before the next five years is up, its over 300 tags. Any takers? Too many in UT like the fact that its becoming a trophy destination. They think it's neat. Heck, on another website a poster from UT used the Expo as partial "proof" that UT was the "hunting capitol of the country". One of the other parts was the number of trucks with 'hunting' stickers...
