Hi everyone. Signing in from Utah.

That's cool. One of the State big game biologists is a close friend. I get a lot of insight to how the State works. I don't always agree with them, but I am empathetic.

Hello and welcome!

I live in Nevada but hunt Southern Utah sometimes. I have a whole whopping one point for deer as a non-resident in Utah, and am thinking of using it this year to go for a primitive muzzle-loader deer tag in the Zion or Boulder/Kaiporowitz units.

If you have any info about either unit I'd love to hear about it, and let me know if you have questions about hunting in Nevada.

I just looked up my cuz. Apparently, he just retired! He was Assistant Habitat Section Chief, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. Did a LOT of fly fishing, mostly for cutthroat, but has landed over 75 species of fish on a flyrod. Pretty impressive to me! Paul Thompson.

I know the Zion unit fairly well although when I've hunted there it's been during the archery hunt. Depending how late the muzzleloader hunt is, that Zion unit can start to clear out as the deer migrate into the Paunsaugunt unit. With only one point you're playing the lottery. Here is what I see for those two tags. There are way better options at the odds level if you really want a tag. If you had to play one, roll your dice on the Boulder unit.

Wow, thank you! I just subscribed to GoHunt and was wondering why it showed 100% draw odds for me only for the muzzle-loader hunt for this unit, with the odds so much lower for basically every other deer hunt in the area. I'm guessing the GoHunt odds predictions aren't always accurate especially in a unit where there are few non-resident tags?

Yea, odds are a funny thing. There are a lot of ways to slice and dice that info from the States. Especially on hunts with single or low quotas, you'll can get real erroneous data. If you want some good options for your muzzleloader tag let me know I'll send some your way. One thing I have is data.

Thank you so much offering some advice. I have one point in Utah and I'm eager to go ahead and hopefully use it to hunt this year. I don't care about a trophy, I just want a good chance of harvesting a meat buck, and preferably in a unit that has not had any CWD.
