Hammer Bullets - what makes them so great?

After switching to unleaded years ago I was a Barnes bullet fan. They never let me down but had some kills where the animal went a bit further than I expected. After reviewing the terminal performance of Hammers and the accuracy people were getting I wanted to try them. I had a new rifle that I didn’t have any Barnes bullets for so I ordered some Hammers. I even emailed Steve and he was more than helpful. I shot a pronghorn lat week with it. It was further than what I would have used a Barnes on and the result was a a dead buck. Once I use up my Barnes in my other rifles I am switching them all to Hammers.

That's a hammer bullet?
I was under the impression that all hammer bullets lost their petals after entry. Would that count as a bullet "failure"?
It's hard to argue a dead bear.

Yep definitely a hammer. Started life at 3100fps. Bear was right at 100

That certainly doesn't look like the 220 HHT picture on the website. Bands start just above the boat tail.

You’re right. That’s what he said he ordered when he was going to shoot hammers in it and what he said he shit it with. I’ll have to ask him and do a little more digging on it.

Additional thought.

We hear stories all the time of people finding various other bullets and broadheads in game...

He says they are the hammer 220 hht. Is the hammer picture on the website just a generic picture? I’ve never held any of the 220s so I don’t know.

The HHT bands are much more gradual/less pronounced than on the other Hammers. Think the bore could have just smoothed them out so that they aren't as visible?

I don't believe so.

I've only recovered one Hammer.

It looked like this....

Grooves through the bands were clearly visible. Though this is a Hunter, not HHT.

Either way, its not how I would expect a Hammer to work.

Especially with that impact velocity.

Never have seen a Hammer look like that. Boattail doesn't look right either. Might send the pic to Steve. mtmuley

He sent them to their Facebook page. He’s grabbing some measurements and a picture for me this evening. Like mentioned earlier in the thread wonder if it’s not an old wound that they stumbled on the bullet. Haven’t handled enough hammers to see the difference from the picture. Luckily the hunttalk detectives might be on to something
