We start shooting every Friday afternoon in the spring before it gets too hot for good range results. We have been dodging storms and extra windy days but have managed to get in a couple.

Last weeks highlight for me was shooting my buddies AHR 600 Overkill with 900 grain Woodleigh solids over 140 grains of powder.

My goodness! I may have heard you on the range, two counties over!! Crocodile Dundee would have to admit that that is a BULLET!!

All I can think of is Spinal Tap's "Big Bottoms."

Oooof-dah. That's got to be a whollop. Velocity? Parent case?

It was based off a 600 nitro express with a magnum belt. The load I shot was 140 grains and 150 is suppose to be around 2400 fps producing 12,000 ft lbs with the 900 grain bullet.

He loves big bores, he did go on an elephant hunt last year but didn't find the one he wanted and now with recent laws elephant hunting has gone south.

I have fired 500 nitros before and it really wasn't any worse than that, but standing is the only way I would ever shoot one.

It really was fun, but wouldn't want to shoot it anymore than a few times.

I think at that point, we call it ordnance. :D

I'm still saving my pennies for a 470 NE. Or a 450 NE or...

If I had spent the money to build and shoot a rifle like that I'd just have to pop a deer or something with it. Good thing I can't afford 'em, as I think I could get a kick (yes, pun intended) out of having some big bores.

Straight arrow, that is a post shot action shot I was leaning forward when I broke the trigger.

It is pretty heavy and has at least a couple of mercury reducers in the stock. I'll have to check the weight. These rifles are out of my league as well, but it is fun having a friend that can afford them and lets me shoot them. Probably close to $20 a pop.

375 is my largest but have always thought I would like 458 lott but it is down the list a fair piece.

Kind of just fun trying them out.

It made it through 5 Cabela's hardback catalogs but my 100 mph tape didn't hold up. I couldn't find the bullet in the berm.

I'll throw a range pic in. This is from about circa 2010, giving some instruction on the M4 Carbine, to the Governor of Minnesota while he visited my unit's range prior to deployment.

They had stacked up pretty good and wifey said they had to go, so what better way?

Straight Arrow, you want to be ready and make sure you have a good grip when you cut it loose.
That thing has an extremely light trigger too, which I would change if it were mine. I dry fired it first and believe me you don't want your finger anywhere close to the trigger before you are ready. Kind of scared me it was so light on such a heavy recoiling rifle.

Go to their site, they even make a 700 bore. This rifle was built with a Montana action but he makes a lot of rifles off of CZ actions.

That'd pucker the ol' sphincter... The old saying about double rifles makes more sense now... If it has 2 triggers pull the back one first lest you pull both!

This thread inspired me to get away from "gourmet night" with a house full of women and get some good range time in with a problematic rifle. I think I'm just resigned to this ruger being a 1.5 inch rifle.

BL, 1 1/2" used to be the hunting rifle standard. You can take a lot of game with that accuracy.

I'm still trying to figure out what is on the menu for this weeks session. I'm thinking M1 Garand with the D-day anniversary coming up. My dad just got back from Normandy and was quite moved by the experience.
