Gun Porn Wednesday at the range

BL, 1 1/2" used to be the hunting rifle standard. You can take a lot of game with that accuracy.

I'm still trying to figure out what is on the menu for this weeks session. I'm thinking M1 Garand with the D-day anniversary coming up. My dad just got back from Normandy and was quite moved by the experience.

Yeah, I know. It's more of a confidence thing with me. I get a flyer on the second shot, which is what opens the group up and the 3rd & 4th seem to settle back down into about 1 inch. The flyer can head upwards of 2 inches at times, especially if I'm not on. Going to have the action bedded and see if that does anything. I free floated the barrel and that seemed to give it a little bit more consistency.

Also going to put a decelerator pad on it. The factory pad & stock design make it a beast to shoulder even with 180 grainers (300 WM).

Probably that "old guy" flinch that I have every once in a while when by concentration flags and my conscience tells me that "this is gonna hurt"; especially after 15 to 20 rounds.:D

Ben- My Ruger was helped out by bedding the pressure points at the end of the forend. A little trick I picked up from John Barsness.

I'd bet if you can get the rifle to shoot 1" your groups from field positions would be the same as they are now with it grouping 1.5"...

Holy bat droppings, Bat Man! That thing would re-arrange my repaired shoulder. I am sure glad that I don't have to buy the bullets and powder for that thing! I would have to go back to work!

I'll put some material at the pressure point on the bbl and see if that helps. I free floated it last year, and it seemed to help a bit, but we'll see. If that doesn't work, then it's off to the smith for a tune up & bedding.

Tarheel - PAST Recoil pad - never leave home without it!

Todays session; Checking zero on M1 for upcoming Garand match and trying Hornady PA conicals in my Lyman 50 cal great plains flint-lock rifle.
M1 100 yard zero was on and these conicals really shot well, I had a 3" group @100 yards with 85 grains of 3Fg.

Nice! Great shot of the Garand.

I was under the impression you'd want a coarser BP than 3FG for anything over 45 caliber?

Yes, that is the rule of thumb but there is overlap. 3fg is also used up to 54 cal, and I know a lot of guys that use it in 50 cal rifles. I back off my volume by about 5 grains between 2fg to 3fg.

I love shooting the Garand!
