Guiding.. Pro's and Con's.

I've helped a lot of people/friends...from antelope to elk, but never for money.

I enjoy helping friends most of the time...but theres been a couple things that have really bugged the crap out of me too.

I helped one friend a lot in Wyoming and Montana for antelope, mule deer, and whitetail. Took him to the best areas I knew and he killed some good animals. The problem was they guy never offered to drive, never had any ideas or suggestions when we were hunting, and wouldnt hunt by himself at all. Wanted to be right on your heals all day. But, be sure that he bitched plenty about all kinds of stuff. Once the work started, he expected me to cape his critters, get them ready to pack, and do most of the packing. Also expected me to butcher his critters when we got them back to the house.

I mean really, at that point I may as well hire on with an outfitter and get paid for the effort. All I did was waste a bunch of my own time to help the guy out. Even worse, when I drew an area he hunted...he never had the time to lend a hand or even mark a few spots on the map.

I dont need that...and wont be making that mistake again.

Honestly, I think some friends have got to be more demanding than a paying client.

Buzz, sounds like you let someone use you. Half your fault for letting it get that far.
I would have showed him how to cape an animal if he never did it before but after that, have at it dude unless the guy has always offered the same help in return.
I wouldn't be surprised if the same guy would tell everyone where you showed him to hunt too. One of the biggest reasons I hunt alone most of the time is most of my friends are a lot like your leaker buddy and I would rather do without. But it sucks hunting alone at times (at least nice to camp together) so I know why you probably put up with him.

Schmalts,

I learned my lesson, but you are correct, it was half my fault. Dont be an enabler.

I tell you what, hunting with a good hunting partner is great...hunting with someone that just wants a free guided hunt gets old in a hurry.

You're right, I should have put my foot down long before I did. Funny thing was too, when he found out the free guided hunts were going to come to end...he got pissed.

You don't need a school for Guiding under an Outfitter. You only need a School for the Outfitting.

You still need your first aid and cpr cards, also your guides license........better get the ball rollin...

Gato, You don't need a CPR card, jes da first aid card. At least thats what the gal at the IOGA told me a few days ago.

I would get that double checked, I renewed my cpr course at a IOGA convention in boise last fall, unless they have changed it recently like this yr, it has always been required..

The best client I ever took was my wife on a summer pack trip. That was the first time we ever met and it turned into a lifetime of fun. Now I get to baby sit all the time...our 5 year old girl. The best tip I ever got was a free honeymoon in maui after I guided a guy who owned a hotel on the beach. I paid for the airfare and stayed at his place for 8 days, also went on his marlin charter.

I guess you could say guiding has been very good to me.

I bet it cost him a lot. Not bad, wow, that's a tip, Ha motel and marlin fishing is awesome.

I've only done cheap hunts, relatively speaking. I think the best tip was a hand made damascus steel knife with a girafe bone handle, plus, a certificate that says the girafe was killed by a white lion.

When I get to the last line "killed by a white lion", one friend always jumps in with "BULLSHIT". He's funny, but its a nice knife and a good memory.
