Based on my Etsy Bear Identification kit, it is a black bear. 😀 Despite Etsy, I wouldn’t shoot it unless I got additional confirmation after seeing its claws.

A long time ago, I passed on a bear and let my brother shoot it because I thought I was looking for something bigger. As we approached it, it grew in size, and since we were in country frequented by grizzlies, I had a sphincter tightening experience until I was able to see its claws.

Ive never seen a brown black bear but I have seen a regular black bear and im pretty sure thats a griz and im pretty sure im not gonna chance it and shoot it.

I like to think I’m a pretty good judge of bears but I got all excited a couple years ago and put a stalk on a jet black grizzly sow that ended up having normal colored cubs when they ran off…..

Based on those pics unless it was in area that does t have grizzlies I would not be comfortable shooting that bear.

Interesting to view photos of this Bear from different positions and for the Bear to be in different angles related to the ground. Two important characteristics were consistent in each of the pictures: the dish shaped profile view of the head with round ears and the massive shoulder muscles creating the “hump.”

Wondering, after the Bear left, if you looked for tracks?

Glad to hear this Grizzly chose to move along when prompted by your dog!
