I did a hunt in Florida a few seasons ago. It was a daytime, dry land hunt, and I was able to stalk within 40 yds of this old lizard...crazy fun.

Way cool. Thanks for the picture guys. My 5yo is a big Swamp People fan so I have a feeling that him and I will be hunting gators somewhere someday... :D

The way they do it on swamp people is very different than how we do it here in Florida. First off, no guns allowed in the boat. Second, no hooks with bait and no unattended lines. Check the rules to see how they do it and what you are interested in, it varries state by state. But snatch hookinh one on a fishing pole and then harpooning it boatside in the dark is a rush. Only thing better is run and gun harpooning. Basically run on plane in an airboat and try to run them over and hand throw a harpoon into them. Then you go back and pick up the buoy. Pissed off gator on a rope in a 12' boat with no gun in the middle of a maze of swamp at night.... if that don't get your heart pumping you're already dead!

caught one out of caddo lake on a topwater plug when i lived in jefferson texas

LOL, I did too!! I was fishing a Slugo in the treeline cluttered up with Duckweed between the start of the Government Ditch and Goose Prairie, what they call the Old Folks Playground. I threw it out to a bump I thought was a Cypress Knee, gave it a jerk and Bam! a six footer was towing my boat around. Broke the anti reverse on a brand new Abui Garcia Black Max. It finally openned it's mouth and the Slugo flew out, I had gotten him right to the boat......don't know what I was gonna do with him. LOL Still have the Slugo pinned to a Deer Rack in my office. The Giant Salvinia has just about ruined that side of the lake. John

When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time throwing skum frogs in the thick stuff. Bass love 'em, so do small gators and water mocassins. Got some good bass. Lost a few frogs to the snakes. Never got a big gator that way, but it sure is a cool hit!

I wouldn't try to put one in a bag. Killing them, on the other hand depends on the law where you are hunting..........if you strictly adhere to the law, that is. I've always found that a well placed shotgun blast aimed right at the back of one's "smile" is really effective, and of course there's always the old standby of a bullet in the top of the head, right behind his ears! I think in most legal 'gator killing, it has to be with either an arrow, harpoon, or catch them with a big treble hook and finish them off with a bang stick or a rimfire cartridge.
