Gas/Fuel Price and hunting plans

I spend roughly $4-6k on gas every year. I suspect this year it could be closer to $10k. Some of that cost isn’t recreational but I think my pain point would be $20k a year which means a doubling of current pricing. Not quite YOLO but close in my opinion. What say the rest of you?

Your missing the I bought a Subaru last year to not care about what it costs choice. It isn’t busting my balls either way I can hunt all weekend for 50 bucks still

Didnt change anything for me. Drove a little slower i guess.

Looks like it didnt change much for anyone else - public land all over had big diesels (lol imagine filling that up for 200+ every 3/400 miles) pulling big campers from all over, and about half from really far away.

Basically seemed normal to me. Suprising.

I was going to make some trips north to get my dog on grouse and woodcock in October. At nearly $150.00 to fill up my truck, I’ll stick around home and hunt pheasants out my back door and do some fishing on a nearby lake. There are also some trapping spots that I’m going to be skipping this winter unless prices come down.

Even before the latest spike in fuel prices, it boggles my mind how many people must be living in debt. Like, things weren’t easy before Covid and inflation and now more inflation and now fuel prices so we’re definitely tightening the belt. I don’t know how people do it, unless every other possible way to make a living is more lucrative…

I’ve run into and spoken with numerous hunters who’ve got Starlink set up at camp and are working and hunting simultaneously. That’s got to change and convolute the dynamic as well.

I took my old diesel to E. MT antelope hunting last week, $284 of diesel for about 850 miles of driving. I've already hunted NV, that cost about 500$ in gas. The Honda Fit will get the call this week for mountain goat, no sense in driving the truck since I am just going to a trailhead and sending it from there. I get the consternation over fuel prices, but my expected increase annualized across the year is, at most, 200$ a month. I can figure out how to either save or make an additional 200$ a month.

It absolutely is changing my plans. With me on fixed income and my wife fixed hours at work, plus limited other things I can do, it does have an impact.

Its not just the gas prices that is the issue. A one time, short spike isn't a big deal, but a 50 percent increase over a year ago in any category in our budget is trying for sure.

My biggest concern is diesel prices.

Groceries, animal feed, house hold goods, everything comes on that truck. So it causes that increase as well.

We've cut prices routinely, found ways to save more by purchasing in bulk, and various other things.

Its like Walmart, cut prices on thousands of items per month. But if I save $100 one month in various things, and car insurance or health insurance goes up 40 percent like it did this year, it kind of screws things up by a lot.

It feels like trying catch a falling knife and its getting tiring.

Hasn’t changed my plans yet. I’ve never looked at what I spend in fuel per year. Probably should. I’ve always just chalked it up to I have to get places to enjoy the things I like to do, and there is no way around that. Life is too short sit home because of a variable I have no control over.

Everyone has a price. But it would have to go up A LOT to change my hunting plans.

Hunting is still a truly insignificant amount in my total annual fuel costs. It'll change our strategies around commuting and vehicle ownership well before a single hunting trip changes.

At least for me.

Compared to last year on this day the average price per gallon was $3.19. That’s equals 213.73.

I don’t think that was my point.

My point was if I take an annual or even biannual trip I’m not canceling my plans over $77.

Not going to change my hunting plans. Only one long drive. My elk spot is a half hour away. Puts the squeeze on some folks. My son and his girlfriend rent a 1 bedroom apartment. $1250 a month. Stupid. The fuel costs hits them hard. Yeah. Winning. mtmuley
