I took the Kimber for a walk today, fully intent upon shooting the first buck I saw. One crossed the saddle I was sitting on at 9AM. I judged it at 250 and held dead on. When I got down there I found bone and blood. Not good blood.

The track took me two hours to work out. Several times I lost it, with very sparse blood. The last time I lost it I spent about a half hour working circles and finally picked up the trail. A short while later I jumped a buck, favoring a front leg. He stopped in a small opening and I was able to thread a finishing shot in.

I shot him on the back of the ridge in the upper left. He took me all the way down to the bottom and the back up. All told, probably over a mile.

As he lays. Lots of prayers were answered today. This is no brag. Far from it. It’s a humble recognition of doing your due diligence when you screw shit up.

If you were able to recover one of those hammers can you post or send me a pic of it. I’m very curious how those turn out.

With the first deer I ever killed I had a similar situation. Took me most of the day to find him and finish the job. I felt terrible, but have never been as focused—before or since—as I was while i was trailing him. A lot of lessons learned that day. Thanks for sharing. I’m glad you got him.

went through a similar situation with finding my girlfriends buck this year, i to was thankful for answered prayers  , that feeling of relief when the deer is found is well known, congrats on a buck

Unfortunately, I have heard several stories of animals shot with these type of bullets and the animal either is lost or is found after a lengthy tracking job. One big white-tailed buck was hit and not recovered by the hunter; the next day another hunter killed the deer and the original wound channel from the first hit was minimal.

I’m willing to bet the only reason they are lost or a lengthy tracking job ensued is because of poor bullet placement.

Looking fwd to using the 92g hammer. Carried the 25-06 a couple days over Thanksgiving but no ignition events.

Congrats on finding your buck. Not every shot is as free from drama as we would like. Way to stick with it.
