I am from PA and I am new to this forum. I drew a NM Unit 34 (1st Archery Season) tag. The bulls seemed to be just turning on in my opinion, but then again it was the first time I have done this. First morning I had a rag horn at 10 yards, but thought I would hold out since it was the first morning. Anyway that was the only bull I got close too, then on the last day I let this guy have an arrow, just still hunting up a ridge. I know he is small but I am pretty happy. It took too long to draw NM, so I am going to put in for it again, but I am looking to another state, possible Montana or Idaho for an OTC tag. Anyway thanks for looking...

Welcome. Jealous of the opportunity and the success on your first elk. Stick around and enjoy HuntTalk.

Good job on a first hunt! I lived in Alamogordo for 10 years. We loved that area and had a blast hunting and riding ATVs in the mountains . I only killed a couple elk there, as it was easier to draw other permits. We did kill a number of cow elk on the reservation to the north. The only thing that I miss about New Mexico is those mountains AND the resident permit fees!

I'll be heading to 34 for the muzzy hunt in a couple weeks...
Looks very green.
congrats on the elk

Thanks everyone!

Howdy, just talking with a few guys in camp they say that the muzzleloader hunt is the best hunt to get. I am an ultra passionate bowhunter so I am hoping to draw the second season archery someday.

In the meantime I am looking at Idaho, I am also a big mountain biker, and I am thinking there are some good units there where I can use that skill. Maybe ride and bivy a few days...anyone do anything like that around here?
