Extreme velocity monos.

Anyone have a load for hammer hunters 177gr with ramshot magnum powder out of a 28 nosler
If you look on the hammer forum they have a pdf going of load data from different users. I believe the same pdf is also on longrangehunting forum as well. So you might be able to find it there.

Ran some ladders today:
257 Weatherby, 67 gr shock hammers.
IMR 4350 70gr. 3776
71 3918
72 4021
73 4074
75 4119
75 4266
Finally found pressure @ 75, but the group was huge, rising vertically.
IMR 4064
65 gr 4055
66 error
67 4174
68 4224
69 4316
70 4425 Too hot, heavy bolt, bright ejector.
These six were in about 1 1/8”, gonna load 5 @ 68, 68.5, & 69 and see what I’ve got. I haven’t figured drops yet but this is screaming, ought to be hell on yotes this winter.

26 nosler 109 gr absolute hammers
H1000
80 gr 3525
81 3613
82 3624
83 3648
84 3701
85 3750
86 3770
87 3832 86 & 87 were too hot, heavy bolt.
Looks like I should try 84, 84.5, & 85 for groups. The faster I pushed this the group got smaller. I’m very limited on powder, wish I could try something different.

Hell yeah. mtmuley

A little more field testing today.

280 Remmy
131 Hammer Hunter
RL16

3230 fps, 0.7 MOA over five shot group.
How long is your barrel? I got an average of 3148 with 140 gr absolutes with 58gr of IMR 4350 out of a 22. About .7 groups as well. I may want to look at the 131 HH.
For that matter I need to get my hands on some different powders, I can’t do any better with my 280ai, topped out @ 3300 on the ragged edge!

My Dad has grown tired of whitetails running 100 yards into briar patch hell holes before dying with his 127gr Barnes LRX @ 2700fps load in 6.5 Creedmoor, so I worked up a load with the 123gr Absolute Hammers. I wouldn't call the results "extreme velocity" in an absolute sense, but it is extreme compared to what I was getting with the LRX's. +371fps and +25% energy with my selected load at 3071fps. I don't think he'll have issues with deer running anymore, especially with the increase in energy transfer with the terminal ballistics of the Hammer vs Barnes. Unfortunately I won't be able to get the gun back to him before deer season ends this year to see what it does on deer.

I should also mention that its shooting under 3/4" at 100 yards. Not bad for a gun that was $180 after rebates a few years ago.

6.5 Creedmoor
Savage Axis
22" Barrel 1-8" Twist
123gr Absolute Hammer
210M primer
Varget
0.020" off lands
1/8 turn Lee Factory Crimp Die
41.5gr 3071fps [selected load]
43.0gr 3165fps [stiff extraction, max load]

Not trying to be a tool, legitimate question for those more familiar with the testing that's been done by Hammer...how long are barrels lasting with combos like this? 600? 800? 1000?

I haven't done any long-term testing of high velocity hammer loads, but I did have a 257 Weatherby that burned up a barrel in 700 rounds shooting mostly Nosler ballistic tips. Accuracy dropped off slightly but the bore scope showed the throat had eroded to over 1" long 😬.

I suspect it speeds up barrel wear to whatever cartridge it is now performing like. For example, if your 280 Ackley is now shooting velocities of 7mm Rem Mag's, I would expect similar barrel life to a 7mm Rem Mag.

Really similar to what I worked up with H4895

If you go to the Hammer site, you will notice guys loading Hammers to extreme velocities probably don't care about barrel life. Mostly throat erosion kills a barrel from what I understand. Hammers move faster with equal powder charges when compared to other bullets. Doubt it's an issue. mtmuley

I can't imagine I'm loosing barrel life by running them.

243 with 70 grain Hammers using 47 grains of H4350 vs 44 grains with 100 grain Sierras. 3500 fps. Vs 2800 I think.
3006 with 152 Hammers with 51.5 grains IMR 4895 at 2900 vs 57 grains 4350 with a 150 speer at 2850.

The Hammers also have a lighter bearing surface, which I am sure helps get faster velocities with the same powder.

And for the guys that are truly pushing things into the extreme category are running custom rigs as well and the barrel cost is really negligible.

Even for a factory rig, rebarreling might be 500, and the bullets are $114/100 in my one instance, so at 1000 rounds the barrel is still a low cost. And 1000 is a lot in a hunting rig anyway.

An AR 15 barrel is a couple hundred and I can swap that in 15 minutes. Not sure if I want to switch over to Hammers for that though.

Agree with Mtmuley
