Elk Photos

A few late season cow froms the Lima Montana area.

One of my high school buddies and I got these two:

These two were the year before. My buddy Doug and I drove to Lima, leaving Missoula about midnight. We slept a couple hours in -15 degree weather in the back of the truck. We woke up at daylight and the first hillside I glassed had about 50 elk on it. A truck drove up and we chatted with the guy...he "handnt seen an elk since opening day!".

About 4 hours later, Doug and I did the...1...2...3...bang...bang.

Buzz you must of been able to get multiple elk in year to get 41 since 1980. Quite the collection of photos.

Greenhorn you make me sick.

Here's a few photos of my "320" bull. Thanks Buzz for making me feel like a shlub regarding my scoring ability.

My friend Peter tags along sometimes and took this photo. He's a photographer and backpacking machine. Saw this picture was recently used in an article in "Outside Bozeman" on dressing for bad weather conditions.. the irony.. the worst evening of my life. I wanted to sit down and just freeze to death and was close to hypothermia as I've ever been, and deleriously exhaused... but that was about 6-8 hours after this photo was taken.

BRI,

I want you field judging all my elk...matter of fact...you did.

I remember a hunt not long ago..."hey I found a bull, he's a pretty good one too"...

Perhaps the understatement of that entire trip.

This is probably one of my favorite pictures. My dad hiked the 3.6 miles on the next day with me. Then was mad when I wouldn't let him carry anything out.

Lawnboy...I've had elk/deer tags in Montana for the last 29 years...plus, I've hunted Wyoming 10 straigt, where you can have TWO elk per year, plus got lucky and drew an AZ tag. Doesnt take many years of "3-pers" to stack up some elk in a hurry. These are the good old days for elk.

I remember about 10 years ago there was a well-known outfitter on hunttalk. I remember him telling me shortly after I moved to Wyoming that "Wyoming isnt Montana, you cant hunt park elk down here, we'll see how you do down here, you'll be lucky to get an elk"...

Yep, he was right...most years I didnt get "an elk" most years I got TWO.

I bet those WY elk wish I'd move back to MT...

Shot this one within the first 20 minutes I ever hunted elk in Wyoming.

Then I went on a raghorn shooting spree in following years:
