Daines Senate Seat 2026

I am strongly opposed to his intent to eliminate protections for Wilderness Study Areas, many of which are valued by Montana as pristine and really should be Wilderness.

100% - I had planned on starting a thread on this very topic. Daines is one of the wealthiest senators in Congress, and it's obvious given his voting. He's just another spinless Trump sycophant.

I have written several emails to him, telling him that directly.

I don't think it bothers him. I've been mulling writing about the latest incident in MPLS. For now, I realize he is not too concerned about what one old retired refinery worker thinks about him.

It seems reasonable to cast a large net over Montana's top politicians, characterizing them as uber wealthy. The Governor is the most wealthy governor in the nation. The Congressional delegation is comprised of multi-millionaires. It is very difficult for me to believe that any of them can really relate to issues such as "affordability", health care costs, escalated housing prices, exorbitant property tax bills, and other concerns of everyday citizens. Then there are MAGA lockstep ... even bootlicking ... images in the news.

With respect to this HT forum, the public land and wilderness special places of the LAST BEST PLACE are of special concern.

Didn't your prop tax just get reduced...?
Yes, but only after requested review of appraisal and a tax bill formal protest.
But to the gist of your question, the attention to the exorbitant property tax issue by the Governor I would argue is politically motivated, but to his credit also resultant of an emphathetic realization of the burden on everyday citizens. Furthermore, it was the recent changes enacted by the State Legislature, mostly orchestrated by Lew Jones, that made the difference. Obviously, signed into law by the Governor.

I was scooped by Gulf.

I don't know why some can't be bothered to do their own research, if they question an assertion.

Regier was Senate president and McGillvray was Senate majority leader, so while plaintiff isn't the MT GOP specifically, it's also not just some guys on the fringe.
Yep, it was just a few Montana mini-MAGA minions partly still upset that an adequate number of Republican legislators actually decided to work for their constituents and voted for what they deemed to be good bills, alongside Democrats. This group of conscientious legislators has recieved chastisement and alot of grief from their party. But in the eyes of most Montanans, they did good.

Not just grief and chastisement, they were censured and stripped of voting rights in the 2025 GOP Convention with the party no longer recognizing them as republicans.

Property tax (on individuals) is theft plain and simple. If you are making money on your property, (rental, retail, farming, ranching, mining, service, industrial, utilities, etc.) that is a different topic.
But none of this has anything to do with Daines reelection bid...

Paying property taxes, for local services is reasonable to me. Schools, city or county snow plows, ambulance services, fire departments, etc cost money. I don't mind covering my share thru property taxes.

I am not seeing why a tax on property is evil. A property tax reflects how frontier schools were developed (families with children pitched in to build a local one-room school for Grades 1-8 then hired one teacher) by private initiative rather than wait for the government to find a way to pay for schools.

I pay all sorts of taxes and fees. You do as well. Is not much fun. I doubt any of us feel under-taxed.

I pay property tax local including for bond levies passed by vote. Sales tax state and local. Payroll, Federal and State. Gasoline taxes, Federal and Local. I pay into parking meters to park on public streets I funded. Entry fees to enter "public lands" parks. Hunting licenses and various fees even if hunt only on private lands. Federal duck stamps. My purchases of hunting arms and ammo carry 10% to 11% excise tax paid by the seller but is built into the cost so I am effectively paying it. My phone bill passes along taxes.

I do benefit from the $100,000 plus that is collected along the way each year. I help fund the cost for schools, roads, jails, airports, etc. Property taxes fill part of that so if are theft then someone needs to come up with more taxes or fees or cut services so bigger classes or fewer school days or more potholes or something. Until then, merely ending property taxes will create a void.

As for politicians, yes, I agree with many of us that no mater if R or D or I or whatever by the name that once elected the same Coach calls the shots. National planks might differ but at the end of the day the next Congress will spend more per capita than the prior Congress and whistle through the graveyard of our soldiers as drop bombs and put boots on the ground somewhere. I guarantee it.
