Cementum aged critters - Let’s see them..

This one was aged at 4 with a "B" reliability and a range of 3-4 years.

I think he was at least 5 but could have been 6 or even 7 based on looking at his jawbone. I don't have a long history of trail camera pictures of him but I do have a few.

Here he is when I killed him. Based on the saggy skin around his neck he sure seemed like an older buck to me.

Here is his jawbone. The top one. The bottom jawbone is from another buck I killed that year that a biologist aged at 4.5 based on looking at it's jawbone. That would make me think for sure this buck is at least a couple years older than that.

4.5 years old southeast MinnesotaIMG_7301.JPG

Will be really interesting when I eventually send the next batch of teeth in since I have a lot of history with a couple of the bucks and know their ages very closely based on watching them grow. These others that I have previously had done I have to rely on the data received.

Had this one aged, just to prove a know it all neighbor wrong. He was adamant it was only 3.5 years old

It seems people like to under age deer in my area of southeast MN. Had a video I posted a couple years ago (not here) of a mid-150s 5x5 I passed on. The comments that were coming in were saying 3.5 years old. Not to say it couldn't happen, but I would be shocked if it came back that way. Seems a lot of people assume every deer could grow to be 200" if given time. Sure, the genetics CAN be there, but not all of them have it. Note: I did not see a 200" deer walking around the next year...nor the year after that.... :)

SE AK 18 years old with A certainty. The year was 2024, dang students doing data entry!

Probably the license year (2023-2024)? It gets confusing when we have clients call in asking for age data from a given year, i.e. 2017, are they referring to license year, calendar year, or the year we aged them (which could and often is 3 different years) lol.

You know what, it guess that would match up to the draw results being spring 2023 for the 23 fall and 24 spring hunts. Thanks, now I feel dumb rather than the student data person lol
