Catch All Fishing Thread

When you fish as much as me, the same old routines can get a little tired, and you need something new to chase. I seem to be entering what appears to be a "pike phase" of life; trout's a shout and bass is a blast, but after seeing a few big pike roaming around and knowing that the state and local tribes want them out of local waters, well, that's a lot of pieces coming together to build a new fishin' addiction. Started fishing for them last summer, not lots of luck - never fished for them before and didn't know anything about em really. First good one I caught escaped the net, hopped through the grass, and swam off on me. I learned then that this is was going to be a difficult fish.

Fast forward to yesterday, it's my dad's birthday, and he wants go fishing. Which means I'm taking him fishing. Hit the river, and he hooks into a VERY nice brown trout - his first in Montana ever, and first in about 60 years since the last one he caught on a canoe trip in MN. So he's having a great time, and off I go to see if the water temps are getting bassy yet, and looking for good spots where pike might be lurking.

An hour of watching big browns chase bass away from my lures (seemed funny at first, then the "oh this is why they're a bad fish" realization clicked), and I decided it was pike time. Threw on the ol' reliable brown trout pattern Pot O' Gold spoon seen here (catches literally everything, even caught a Superior Whitefish on it once), and a few minutes later had my first nice pike that actually went into the bag and made it home. Just shy of 30"

Now I have to learn how to meat this thing out. YouTube makes it seem easy enough but we'll see how that goes. Any tips or advice from pike veterans would be appreciated!

And also just did some milling around - I was on a stretch of land and water that I'm just now getting around to exploring. The land and plants looked really good, and I figured I should be seeing some animals. Wound up coming across a turkey that I swear was almost 4 feet tall (this thing could go toe to toe with a sand hill crane), and two black bear siblings out snacking and goofing off. I didn't get a picture of the turkey unfortunately.

Happy spring, everybody!

We've been pounding the crappie in southern IL since early April. Heading back again this week.
Hopefully the weather and fish cooperate. 🤞
