Car Insurance - (For 16 year-olds)

Both of my kids started driving the same summer. They each got a starter car paid by mom and dad and paid us what the insurance premium increased by for their share through part time work while in high school and college.

My 19 yo daughters premium is $289 per month (~$3500 per year) (liability only) after good student discount on a 2007 Toyota Camry. She did just win a full tuition and fees scholarship at the 4 year school she will be transferring to next fall, so I think I'll let it slide a couple years.

But I would like some feedback from folks on when they did transition the kids off onto their own car insurance policy...and what their phase in was.

Sign title to kid.

They get their own insurance and register it on their own.

Just put my 16yr old son in a 2014 F150....approx $1400/yr./ Have 17 yr old daughter in 2019 Honda CRV at about $1250/yr. State Farm $500 collision deductible. They are both sep policies for those vehicles with them as driver. They are also covered for our other three vehicles, but on this vehicle they are the primary. Before the daughter had the CRV, had her in my old 2003 Accord, with only liability and that was WAY cheaper....State Farm had a "Steer Clear" program that they did and that discount did a lot with multicar and home and no accident...

I had twins get drivers license and my other daughter 1 year later. I helped them purchase a car. They had to get their own insurance and maintain it. All 3 made it through high school and college paying for their own insurance. Best life lesson they learned. Early on there was some complaints but that went away. Now I am more concerned that they work like idiots. Lol. Same as me.

I went straight to work right out of high school and one of my first brilliant decisions was to buy a brand new 1979 Camaro. Insurance back then for an 18 year old ran about $120 per month which was terrible, but all my buddies were doing the same thing and we had cool cars. Got rid of that car after a few years and scaled back to a 6-8 year old Toyota pickup (paid cash) and reduced my expenses considerably.
