Butt ugly knife

Not as ugly as the one I’m almost finished with. O1...should be quite close to a Nicholson file, which happens to be what I used. I ground it, then drew it in a toaster oven. A file still won’t do much to it. Based on temp it should be around RC 61-62. That’s a few points harder than most like with 1095 or O1(almost the same things). I had to heat the tang to get holes in it for pins, pretty much down to finishing the handle scales. Holy cow is it sharp. Anyone who hasn’t used a carbon steel knife has no idea what they’re missing. Your knife is gonna be one heck of a workhorse.

You are all too kind!
But thanks for the kind words.

I bought some bar stock steel, 01 if that means anything to anyone, quite an easy steel to use for a first knife apparently.
The hardening process was fairly cheap only £10/knife including post and packing (around $12)
My friend is a saddler, he is going to show me how to make a leather sheath.

@Paul in Idaho you should try it, it will make a good 'hand me down' to your family.

I think the way to go is to get a belt sander, I know they can be made DIY style but I don't have a clue!

Cheers

Richard
I use a 1"x30", it's small and a bit under powered but I have build about 20 knives on it. Start small and build yourself up in gear, you will thank yourself.

Sounds good, can we see a photo?

@220yotekiller as long as it works it's fine isn't it?
Can we a see a photo of your knives please?

Just have the one. It’s ugly. I’ve pinned the scales and started sanding them more, but don’t have a pic since then on the phone. Looks like the last picture was right before I drilled it. The pic of it in the stock pot was right before I heated up the tang so it could be drilled. I made a few mistakes. The handle was originally wider and had some belly and a knob on the end so it wouldn’t slip out of your hand, BUT I didn’t leave a shoulder for the finger guard that was wider than the handle, so I had to cut the handle narrower and straight. :( It’s been a 15min here, 20min there project. I can really appreciate things of beauty that other people make, but when it comes to personal projects, once it works it’s good enough for me.

Before you know it you will be playing with etching blades, stonewashing, etc... it gets addictive.

Three different kitchen knives I have shipped out in the last couple weeks. Top and bottom are 1084 and the middle 52100. Top etched/stoneashed, bottom two etched with mustard and red onion. IMG_2282.jpgIMG_2559.jpgIMG_2673.jpg

Finished the 2nd knife with the green liner, it is from the same piece of 01 steel, the 2nd one was a bit of a pig to get sharp, but it's razor sharp now, just need to make the sheaths.
Apologies to the knife makers on here for my attempts!
Do most of you have 2x72 belt sanders?
Cheers

This is the closest thing to a knife I have made.......did this while teaching welding one Saturday. Head is 3/8 mild steel, threaded bar and round bar for shaft and handle (all scraps just sitting around). No forge or oven.....had to cut and heat with an OA torch and beat into shape with a 3 pound hammer. Grinder, file and Lansky puck for edge. My wife had her 35 HS reunion last year and since their mascot is a Viking I donated it to the raffle. Guy paid $50 for it ;) I guess there is no accounting for taste.......

I started with a 1x30 and upgraded about 7 months ago to a 2x72. Naturally the 2x72 allows you to grind faster and you get a much broader spectrum of belts to use as well. It doesn't grind as hot and the belts last 10x as long.

But you can still turn out nice knives on a 1x30. Here are a few of mine on a 1x30:

I might make it look more professional after hunting season this winter, but that’s how it’s gonna hunt this fall. It’s uglier than the OP’s, but it cuts.

As crocodile Dundee said 'that's not a knife, now that's a knife!' that is a cracking knife @ImBillT

Green looks cool with the lighter wood.

Lol! That picture may make it look bigger than it is. The blade is about 6.5” long. It’s replacing a Puma Bowie that I lost on a hunt last year. A Puma Bowie is actually not very big. It’s downright small for a Bowie. I prefer something a little bigger than most skinner type knives for getting backstraps out, and the drop point is still serviceable for skinning. 4.5”-5” and a little more belly would probably be better, but since I still had the sheath from the Bowie I thought I would just start with that.
