Burgum headed for Secretary of Interior

It is interesting to revisit these threads and see if people still have the same reactions. Does anyone else ponder why the Sec of Interior is making trips to Venezuela to promote their oil?

Referring to my second post on this thread… it went the wrong direction.

Sec. Burgum and the DOI have performed exactly as I hoped they would for the project I have been trying to get going for almost 15 years. I have been nothing but pleased with how he and the DOI have approached the project proposal. Analysis, findings, review, then answer. Just like NEPA was supposed to work. The 25 people I have been able to rehire have expressed a similar positive opinion.

Not surprising. Your user name doesn't scream "pragmatic conservationist". There is no doubt that this administration has been helpful to your industry (second only to Venezula's oil industry, apparently). Doesn't change that it's a shot of epinephrine to keep the heart beating in a dying body. The result is great for you, not so much for any of those 25 that are under 40. Honestly, I would probably have a similar view in your shoes. Maybe file a lawsuit claiming you were wronged over the last 15 years. This Admin is writing checks to anyone that thinks it's doing great.

You really need to update your stereotypes. Coal miners being all "rape and pillage the land" is outdated. We never needed a shot or a handout. What we needed was an Adminstration that played by the rules. We didn't get that from Biden. We have from this one. The natural evolution of the energy industry will be what it is and we will deal with that.

Rather than make ignorant comments about the benefits to our workforce, you should stop by some time and ask them yourself. You are welcome anytime. Great bunch of men and women to chat with. You might just learn something. Or not, either way let me know.

A little sensitive today? I was joking on your user name not you. I admitted I would have a similar view as you if my bank account reflected the same. Doesn’t change the path for coal. But yeah I don’t expect you to be pragmatic. I have talked to many in your industry, from CEOs to miners to customers. Nothing bad to say about any of them other than I have never met one that thought they should pay to clean up their mess. Not judgement, just fact. Your handout has just been different. Same this time- Disregard of states rights and existing environmental laws to keep the dust moving.

A little sensitive today?
I don't think so, maybe. Today is my 21st wedding anniversary but my wife is teaching an 8th grade class today so I am anticipating a rough evening.

Long term, most likely correct. What is absolutely does change is how long that term is. I will take it as a win.

You must hang around some real shitty folks. Since being effectively shut down from production in mid-year 2024, our Owners have never batted an eye at giving us over $20 million a year to continue on in a reclamation only mode while we worked through our permitting issues. Now that we are back in production they continue to provide the same level of funding for reclamation work. What our folks have been able to get done with this funding is resulting in fantastic ground for the elk, pronghorn, raptors, rabbits, pdogs, horses and beef. Easily better than the native, but I have a biased opinion for sure. It most certainly would have been cheaper for our owners to walk away but they haven't.

What I've noticed is this:

1.) There are tons of awesome and great conservationists in the mining and O&G industries.

2.) The companies pay for the lobbying & the trade groups that work diligently to erode EPA, ESA standards, remove safeguards, etc. If that weren't the case, then the extractive industries wouldn't also be funding elections as well.

All just part of the overall world we live in the USA. All sides do it, left/right, conservation/anti-conservation, etc.

The actual humans in the mines and the well-sites aren't the issue. And I think we all should recognize that the mining industry has done very solid work in remediation, often-times mandated by law or regulation; laws & regulations that their trade groups are constantly trying to change.

As for Secretary Burgum, no real surprises. It's the Trump admin. They showed us what they were about before.

Careful what you wish for.

I've been around the block.

If corners were cut, laws were ignored, the smooth sailing will turn to rough seas over time--maybe at the worst time.

No corners cut on my end. I've got enough EA's, supplemental EA's, EIS's, FONSI's and secretarial approvals to fill the Library of Congress. And enough money spent on them to build a good portion of a White House ball room. Only underhanded shit that took place was from Biden stooges. Once gone, NEPA process moved forward.
