Bozeman: is it really that bad anymore?

I had some landowners ask me where we were from when asking for permission. I said great falls and bozeman. They let us hunt. Had I said billings it would've been a no. Billings hunters have a bad reputation with landowners.

Bozeman is getting that way around here too

The landowners around here refer to Bozeman hunters as “F*cking sixers.”

A few years ago some Bozeman guys (with a large hunting brand) got permission to waterfowl hunt on a ranch down here. They kept asking to lease it and the landowner said no but they could hunt whenever and that he gives permission on a first come first serve basis. Fast forward a year and these guys are advertising a hunt giveaway with them on said ranch. Needless to say, landowner found out…hasn’t been a Bozeman hunter with permission since. That rancher is an old timer that’s been around forever and given permission very graciously. He was telling a couple of us about this and his comment was basically that he allows hunting because it brings joy to people, but he won’t allow it when it’s for money.

I like the county codes on Montana’s license plates, and don’t like the fact that when people get the Centennial plates or organizational ones they don’t have them.

If license plates were recalculated based on county populations today, the ones on the back of my truck would have a 16 instead of a 51. Those Sixes would be 2.

I’d buy that rancher a beer. Wish we had more of those around. I was walking door to door with my boy the other day selling raffle tickets it’s funny the amount of no solicit signs people have up now imagine guys pulling into your house a hour before daylight and waking the wife up wanting to hunt your ranch. I’m surprised some don’t press charges just for driving in past a no trespassing sign to talk to them honestly

I share this thought. If I could have my 16 back I would get rid of the centennial ones. Folks I talk to can’t believe it when I say I won’t have one for county in which I am currently in because they don’t have a good reputation.

I’m glad the collective brainpower of hunttalk members recognize how a number on a license plate clearly describes anybody who’s driving the vehicle to a T. Brainpower working at maximum levels..

It’s damn near the same level of douchiness as the guys in pink short shorts keying the Teslas..

My spidy senses go off when I see a tricked-out Tacoma with the backcountry hunter plates. I shouldn't be so judgmental but can't help myself.

Where do you live?
Jardine, Montana. A rural old mining/mountain town with a population under 30 that you can only get to via a dirt road that is hardly maintained, right on the park line. It's a popular spot in the summer for tourist and others to escape to the mountains, and in the fall for many people to come and hunt. I also bartend full time in paradise valley at a very popular bar/music venue. Needless to say, I deal with thousands of tourists and Montanans year-round and have for many many years. The closest "big" city is Bozeman, so naturally I deal with 6 plates more than any other county beside Park year-round. I can confidently say the majority of not great experiences I've had year-round with fellow Montanans have been with those with 6 plates. From trespassing, poaching, hot spotting, entitlement, being assholes in bar, terrible river/hunting etiquette etc. they undoubtably win the suck contest. That being said not all from and who live in Bozeman suck, and not everything about Bozeman sucks they are just in first place for the time being.

That's awesome. Unfortunately the amount of douche bags out number those kind of landowners 10 to 1.
