Boat Buying Season?

Anyone else get the fishing bug this winter and pass the time looking at boat ads? If so, what are you looking to get?

As a newly repatriated Minnesotan, I am looking for a boat. Maybe your used one. The sort of benchmark bar that I have in mind is more or less a Lund Fury, with a 25 horse Yamaha, Suzuki, or Mercury motor in that order. For those that know, it is going to be a Basswood boat. Hence, the horsepower limit.

This may be a great year to buy a boat, it may not be a great year to float a boat! I’ve been wanting a boat again, I miss walleye fishing. Been thinking about a pontoon boat, so we can get all the grandkids involved.

Just remember I guaranteed you a smoother ride with this boat, numbers of walleyes caught is still dependent upon your skills as a guide

That's a nice new boat !

I've been a boat guy all my life and have had the same outboard issues. All my stuff now has Yamaha motors too. Too many problems in the past with Merc, Evinrude and one Nissan outboard.

Hurts a little to say this, but most of us would probably be far better off simply paying for guided fishing every time we want to go and let the guide worry about the boat, tackle and electronic issues. Have found myself doing more and more guided outings in recent years. It's a whole lot easier and less work as you get a bit older. Probably saves money in the long run too.

I have a 2000 Lund with a 225 Mercury Optimax and the Optimax took a crap this last summer. The mechanic said if I wanted to get the Optimax repaired, I would have to take it elsewhere. The Optimax had less than 1000 hours on it. Regardless, the mechanic said the boat was in great shape and I bought a new Yamaha 150. The funny part was the little kicker motor had thousands of hours on it and ran like a champ over the years. The mechanic said that he no longer repairs Optimax and didn't want another in his shop unless he was removing it and replacing it with a Yamaha.

I had problems with the Optimax shortly after I bought, but since we used the kicker motor so much and usually fished within a couple of miles of launching we just lived with it.

I am still ice fishing for a few more weeks, but finishing up the last batch of walleye filets and ready to get the boat back out and fill the freezer!

That is a SHARP looking boat Randy! Congrats on the purchase. Do you run downriggers or just lead lines and planer boards?? I enjoy the process of setting up a new boat exactly how you want it to fit your needs, when I bought my last boat I spent hours just planning where everything would get mounted.

Not this winter but last, I bought a boat. Being more domesticated than others on here I bought a 20 ft pontoon with a 115 HP on the back. Yes, it can carry 10 people and certain members of my family were dreaming of lounging in the sun, but a couple others new better, and it's got the fishing package and we took it out 16 days last summer and it was 90% a fishing boat. Being my first boat, and having yet to incur any catastrophic financial costs (knock on skull), I'd say if someone were thinking about buying a boat, they just oughta.

Those fishing pontoons are slick as heck. Perfect bass, walleye & panfish rigs and comfortable to boot.

Repowering the 16 foot Lund this spring. Nothing like spending thousands on a hunnert dollar boat.
I do it in a heartbeat. If I could find the right boat without a motor on it, I would prefer to buy a new motor. Might give a little bit of an edge to Suzuki over Yamaha.

I repowered my 16’ Lund (1981) in 2023 with a new 40hp Yamaha. Writing the check hurt until I started fishing and not wondering if the motor would run. No regrets at all.

I bought a boat 20 years ago that came with a 2 stroke Mercury 90hp. I'll never own another boat with a Mercury again. Running a honda outboard now. Buddies have good luck with suzuki and yahmaha.
