I suspect that most of the actual best musicians have never been heard by the masses.

All things considered I'd probably have to go with Mozart for this one. Favorite, now that's tough.

The ones we get to see are mostly the ones who get chosen to make money for the big cigars. There are exceptions but the big wigs still have the upper hand. Social media is making a difference with guys like Zac Top, Teddy Swims, & scads of good guitar players...etc. I admire great guitar players...Chet Atkins, Danny Gatton, Knopfler, Alvin Lee, Hendrix, Tommy Emmanuel, Duane Allman, Roy Buchanan, & too many others to list.

I have always thought the best are the ones who can reinvent themselves. How about Steve Winwood (Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, solo, maybe another?), Eric Clapton (Cream, Derek and the Dominoes, The Yardbirds, Blind Faith), Phil Collins made it big with Genesis and on his own.

The artists that are not one trick ponies get my vote. The ability to write major hits with multiple bands tells me they are special.
