Wife and I have been talking of where to head. Get away from the east coast but still be around family. Her brother in near Denver and I have a lot of old friends in Co. But what I really want to know What part of the state do I need to be in to ride my bike year round or most of the year and still be near hunting , fishing and a good art community.

I was reminded of Taos. I've been to Taos 30 years ago. I loved it. Little further down the road from Durango. That's was when I got married and we honeymooned at Valsida Lake Co. I told my wife I could not do art any more and when she asked why I told her we would not be married very long if I did. Back then as an artist , You think riding a bike gets you laid LOL.
But I did tell her I could make a go of art in Taos and do good with in 5 years. But she is a Sp. Ed. Teacher and just about ready to retire. I think we did a smart choice by sticking where we are and it's just about time to move.

I really like the Telluride area. I don't know if the hunting or fishing is any good down there, but great skiing, biking, and hiking nearby.

The same hippies ares till there Dave...I'm betting most of em are libido proof by now.

Ken, Durango would be pricey

Good point....Pagosa Springs then?

I like Telluride a lot but would be more on a Ridgeway or Montrose budget....or Crested Butte, hell I like em all.

Ouray has everything you want and is close to larger areas like Montrose and Durango. Not quite as yuppy as Telluride, one of the most visually appealing places I have ever been.

Enjoy your retirement in a motorhome, travel trailer, or other moveable residence. Then you have the flexibility to take advantage of many areas of Colorado before deciding where you want to settle for the long term.

Good advice here. I know of a couple of folks who did this before buying a place in Nor Cal.

Would welcome you to Idaho, but I have kids/grandkids and would rather not have anybody *Go Off* on me if I gave away any of our secrets. How large is your covered wagon and what type of team is pulling you? Gotta be able to move fast due to the savages we have out here. Know you are used to paved roads, but will be some time coming here:D
