I found this in a two year old very popular outdoor magazine...I love all of the illustrations off the trail.

You are a brave man addict, mentioning atv's here really puts the turd in the punchbowl.;):D

ATV's have ruined opportunities for me more then once while I've been in the field. Nothing like have a bull crashing through the woods towards you and the next thing you know an ATV comes humming down the logging road. Or they run them up off the roads along the trails as far as they can go. I've even seen them saw down timber to make themselves trails to get further back. I think we all know the stories, and have seen the evidence. They do have their place and use ON THE ROAD, but there definetly needs to be tighter restrictions on their use in the field. I'm not busting everyone, I'm sure there are more then a few that use them in a respectful and considerate manner. But then it's all the idiots that are lazy bastards that give it a bad rap. Running around logging roads with your gun in the case on the front of the ATV...really? Lazy. End rant.

Sorry addict, nothing against your post. Good info you've provided. I've just had a few bad experiences with atv's in the field, and I got a little riled up.

Dude...The purpose of my post was that I found this incredibly hilarious/ridiculous/aggravating. This articles illustrations and write-up mention nothing about staying on trails!!! The illustrations do nothing but teach ATV riders how to tear up the mountain. Like you I have been a couple miles away from the nearest road hunting in a non-motorized vechicle area only to have some dick on a dirt bike buzz in where my dad and I were hunting.

You are a brave man addict, mentioning atv's here really puts the turd in the punchbowl. .

Sometimes I actually do try to be a smartass...I try to find humor in things that piss me off.

They don't buy them to "stay on roads and trails". The have them so they can get where they want to without muscle power. It's too bad that this has caused such a problem to wildlife, the environment and hunting as we know it.

Last year at four seperate locations...

Gold Creek/Rattlesnake: Arrived at the gated road to hike in, only to find fresh atv tracks rolling around the gated area...

Pintlers: Hiked into an isolated spot pinched between private land... hiked maybe 1.5 miles in to the fence bordering private, only to find an actual portion of the fence with a "poor man latch"... and why would that be needed? Well, the atv tracks crossing into / out of the public land would be a good indication...

Big Hole: Hiked my pecker off only to have a couple snowmobiles fly by about 100yrds away... 3 in a row... talk about wanting to put a bullet... Area with signs clearly stating no snowmobiles... After trudging back, reported the truck and trailer plate... Pinecone cops unfortunately under staffed.

Ovando: Hiked in with hunting partner, spotted a couple elk couple hundred yards away... planning our strategy, off in the distance, the sound of atv's approached... of course, their path? Right in between our location and the elk... Meh, just venting now...

I didn't have much time to hunt last year and it seems each year - more and more incidents...

On the other side, I have a couple friends with ATV's that do their part in following proper ATV use... Snowmobilers that are in clubs trying to restore some good common sense to operating along permitted areas... What a cluster #$%&. Typically their fight seems to be on opening MORE areas to theoretically alleviate the problems... Not something I am for.

It seems it follows along with unethical hunters that give a bad rap for hunters in general... though in the ATV / Snowmobile world, that percentage is much more significant!

It is frustrating as all hell though...

Oh well, /rant off...

I had two four wheelers booger up a bear hunt of mine this spring.
I hiked two hours, four miles, and 3200 ft elevation gain into this huge basin to glass. Right before I get to the basin, two four wheelers blast by me with their hands over their license plates. Another half mile up the trail and I find a pile of mineral blocks they've been tending.

Worked out pretty good in the end though, the game warden been hauling mineral blocks out of there the last two years, and was 90% sure who was doing it. My description of the clowns made up the last ten percent.

The people know my truck and know I'm the one that they drove by. I keep expecting to come back from one of my hikes to slashed tires or busted windows.

Maybe I should take a pen and paper along with me from now on to write down plates. I would never slash a four wheelers tires...but heh...letting some air out, now that thought would cross my mind.

Central Idaho: 20+ years ago my dad and I had hiked back an old logging road in the dark. As daybreak started to hit we heard crashing coming up out of a hole on one side, we were both ready, crashing getting closer, closer...Vrrrrmmmm as a couple morons on four wheelers come humming down the road towards us, game over, opportunity lost.

Central Idaho: 3 years ago as I walk in to an area for an evening hunt and no one is around, hunting slowly, quietly...and old fart on a four wheeler comes down the trail (which is just big enough for an atv) with his rifle in a case on the rack, pulls up and starts running his trap about how he likes to just ride the trails in the morning and evening hoping to see something...bastard, I wonder if anyone will find his body way back here in the woods?...I turn and continue my hunt, what a prick.

Central Idaho: 2 years ago hunting in a foot+ of snow along a select cut and heavy timber and along comes 2 four wheelers pulling up alongside and chit chat about what and where we were going, then they pull up ahead of where we were going, park their four wheelers and start hunting. Assholes.

Southwest Idaho: Last Sunday I was dove hunting down a drainage and had some areas I was going to and as I was back a few miles I wasn't concerned that anyone else was out there, as I start working up a draw I hear four wheelers coming in off private property on the other end coming towards me, people getting off, yappity, yappity...ruined my hunt, had to turn back. Shitheads.

The stories will never end. Comes down to lazy ass hunters trying to score an easy kill. Which I'm sure happens some of the time. Not sure what a person can do except report them and let the "porcupine cops" take care of it.

From my experiences, atv's are the least of GW's concerns.
