As they lay

Walking up to the Highlander, I put my arrow in the roof of the car, promising that I would put it into the quiver just as soon as I took my backpack off and put it into the backseat.

The Metcalf went into the backseat, and I promptly forgot that I needed to place the arrow into the quiver. I changed out of my camo, walked around the car to the drivers side where I was going to put my muddy boots onto the trashcan liner in the floor, changed into my Hey Dudes and drove off.

A long two track driveway, 4 miles of gravel, six miles of a “super 2” highway and 18 miles of interstate later, and it hit me that the arrow was left on the roof. I called Mrs kansasdad to tell her I needed to go back and find the arrow, concerned that flat tires or personal injury that might happen due to my carelessness.

I called the landowners to tell them I was coming back to find the arrow, and she said she would take a look. Arriving back at the house, she told me she had run the driveway twice with her cellphone flashlight, to no avail.

I put on my Black Diamond headlamp, and had a Peax in my hand and I commenced searching. The area adjacent to where I had parked seemed to be arrow free. I made my way down the lane towards the gravel road, and still no arrow to be found. Thinking it likely that the arrow would have rolled off as I made the right turn onto the gravel I searched on, with still no success.

Walking down the gravel road and coming to the place where I had swerved to miss a small buck coming off the winter wheat, I really scoured the ditches hoping it was here that I’d find the arrow.

About this time I “hear” a still small thought pop into my head…..

“did you even check on the roof”?

Quickening my search as I doubled back to the house, I got back to the car and came around to the passenger side and looked on the roof…

The vanes were securely lodged under the luggage rack rail. It never left the car through the 15-78 MPH travels more than halfway home.

As it lay….
