As they lay

This picture popped up for "On This Day" in my archive from 2009. Obviously not a great "as they lay" result. Shot near sunset day before, hit liver, tracked to edge of a thicket, got dark, left him overnight. Found him right away next morning. Not having hunted much in farm country I underestimated the coyote problem, lost about half of the meat. My first glimpse of the buck was the leg bone laying on the rack, crap!

At the time he was my best whitetail.

My favorite deer to hunt, NW Montana whitetails in the conifers.

Caught a break tonight.

Broken shoulder?
No, actually broke spine just above front shoulders. He rolled and kicked down hill for a bit, before getting hung up in those trees. Had to put one more finisher in him when we found him. 300 WSM loaded with a 168gr Barnes TTSX.
