Friday was opener for Gould's in Arizona. Thursday I had opportunity to take some pics. I was camped within hearing range of a flock since Tuesday but I knew I couldn't be the only hunter with knowledge of their whereabouts. I got settled in real early and when they began descending from their roosts I started to call. The Tom came in fast but he flanked me and blindsided me. Boom, there he was strutting 20 yards away. I kept a bead on him while I tried to see his beard. Realized he wasn't the longbeard from yesterday and was letting him walk away but at the last second before he would disappear I pulled the trigger. Ps. As soon as I stood up after the shot I see 2 hunters walking down the track towards me. I made the right call pulling the trigger.

Sounds like a great hunt and a wise decision. Congrats!

That’s awesome. Finally after 30 bonus points I was able to draw a NR Gould’s tag and fill it opening day this year as well. Those birds are the gobblingist SOBs I’ve ever encountered! I’m back to building points and hope to retire in AZ so it won’t be a once in a lifetime experience.

I know a Californian who has drawn Arizona Gould's twice. Not only that but this year he drew an Emperor Goose permit.....again, twice in 3 years.
