My son is the one who usually rats on me. he's done it with 2 bows and 1 gun. Each about a month after I brought them home.

Not usually. She rarely hears a 'no' from me on anything she wants so she can't complain too much.

Look up "Gun Running" by Patrick McMannus. (At least I think that is the title.) The most important point to get to is to have your wife stop counting, and just refer to them as "all those guns." At that point you are home free.
