From the website:

Season 12 marks one of the most visually stunning and intense seasons of “Alone” yet, in one of the most intense and dangerous locations in series history—South Africa. For the first time on “Alone,” ten new survivalists navigate the rugged and unforgiving Great Karoo Desert and face off searing heat, foul water, unpredictable storms and exotic, dangerous animals. From frequent animal encounters and significant game harvests to unexpected medical extractions, impressive shelter builds, and creative foraging techniques, the survivalists’ mental willpower and wilderness skills are put to the test as they attempt to master new territory in hopes of being the last person standing.

Finally a season where ice cold will be less a factor in determining how the contestants fare.

And perhaps more seasoned contestants compared with other seasons.

We only watched the prequel to the competition beginning. Interesting to see behind the scenes, and start to get an inkling on who might have what it takes to last long. Certainly had to be mind bending to learn that the competition would take place in Southern Africa, and not in an area known for sub zero/freezing climates.

Ol Africa striking the contestants hard

Preview show had me thinking certain folks were front runners. Not so fast my friends!

And who builds a shelter on a game trail by the water in country prone to (rare) flash floods?

Just started watching the first episode, not liking the chances of the ‘New Zealand’ representative! Growing up in London doesn’t seem like a great background.

Folks on this show all talk about how they grew up hunting, fishing, trapping n hanging out in the bush.. And then they don't go do it. Being out takes a lot lot of work. You gotta put in the time. How come folks don't bring a water purifying pump ?
Anyhows just seems to me that they start feeling some illness and they let it consume them. Sitting around in camp. Not a good recipe for success,. Folks getting into their own head.
I do like seeing the country and how some tasks are done. I can say I've spent months out by myself yes I had more than 10 items. The solidarity can get tight. But the serenity is fantastic. There's a win in everything,

Each participant is given choices as to clothing plus ten optional item/s to bring on their adventure. For example, this season sleeping bags were not on the optional list, thus the contestants choose wool blankets (and bivy sacks) for sleeping warmth.

Here is a detailed story about their gear options:

MRS and I are watching this and ALONE Australia Season three in parallel.
I watched 2 episodes of the "Australia" (it was in Tasmania) on the flight to Greece and between like 2 or 3 people noping out on the first night and the continual reiteration of all of the woke/political affiliations of the folks who ended up having NO skills to begin with........ No thanks.

The tap out last night started the day he chose to not bring a sleeping blanket/bivy. Poor sleep lowers physical and mental stores quickly.

I thought it was going to be down one more, the way the contestant was talking.

Finally we saw one hunting ambush set up….for what seemed like thirty minutes of trying. Previous attempts at walk about hunting while providing talking out loud narration has not yielded any results except for the first day warthog.
