My son, daughter and I are planning a Haul Road caribou hunt in 2020. I'm a little confused about the tags. When I read the Alaska guidelines it appeared the tags were draw only. But when I read older posts people talked about buying otc tags. Have the regs changed in the last few years? If so, how hard is it to draw a tag? Thanks for the help.

Read the regs throughly if it’s your first AK trip... there are a few things AK does differently than other state.

Generally speaking as a NR you will buy your locking tag ~$650 + hunting license $160 and then if it’s an “OTC” unit you will get a harvest ticket (free) that you will have to fill out when you kill an animal. The draw units require you to have a permit ($5) instead of a harvest ticket, those you apply for in December. The haul road just requires a harvest ticket, but is archery only (unless you hike 5 miles off the road, that’s a tall order... esp as it’s as the crow flies)
