Ok so I was at Cabelas in billings and was talking with a worker there about hidden elk gem districts . He told me he's shot several bulls on bm land in 701 on gen tag .... is he pulling my leg ?

The term "general tag" gets thrown around loosely sometimes, especially for MT residents where the odds of drawing a PERMIT are good. A permit IS required to hunt bulls in 701.

No it isn't . Only if you plan to hunt very sw corner of 701

Either-sex Elk. General Season Exception: In portion of HD 701 north of Yellowstone River, south of Hwy 12 and west of Sumatra-Hysham Rd only valid for Spike Bull or Antlerless Elk.

Discussing "hidden gems" hunting areas on the internet is a good idea. mtmuley

Basically what I'm wondering is has anyone had success on elk in the gen tag portion of 701

wow doesn't that suck for me.I hunted muleys in that unit and saw a few bulls.I had the combo tag.Wish I knew this 4 years ago.I could have taken home a nice bull with my buck.Maybe next year now I'll have to do the same trip again

The Cabelas worker would be happy to see this.

Some guys just don't get it.

It's a general tag spot I'm sure I'm not telling anyone they didn't know . Sorry if I wrecked someone's spot..... maybe instead I'll just hunt in SE montana for a mule deer ....

I'd love to have a weekend devoted to see what archery and rifle season look like in SE Montana this fall. Unfortunately, I'll have better things to do. This 701 area sounds like a real honey hole, might have to check that out.

Funny thing about hidden gems.

The reason they are gems, is because they are hidden.

This is one of the most bizarre threads I've seen in a while. Somebody is told about a hidden gem in private, then comes on the internet to verify? Huh.

You might think about setting on the north bank of the Yellowstone. With the expected hunting pressure in 704 this year it shouldn't take too long and the elk will be headed your way at a dead run.
