.300 WSM - a sweet spot?

Th LRH and rokslide are on two separate sides of the spectrum. And you trolled both and got the boot that’s funny
What's funny is I'm not banned on RS. And, I got banned on LRH for issues not even related to shooting, bullets or anything close. And to be clear, none if it was trolling. mtmuley

If it was one rifle only id take the 300 wsm everytime. Here in OZ by law smallesr caliber for sambar deer is a 270 but that would be on the light side on banteng and buffalo.

Finally pulled mine out of the gun case this summer after sitting there for 5 or 6 years unused. Used it for a long time before that. With many one shot kills, kids growing up used it as well. Had a gunsmith chop the barrel to 20 inch, put a little bastard brake on it and sit it in a hs stock. Kicks like a .243. Likes the federal loads of 165gr. Barnes tsx.
.300 wizzum (wsm) is a great .30 cal.

Late to the party, I know, but the .300 WSM I picked up last Christmas is proving to be one of my favorite rifles of all time. Stupid accurate and consistent, and recoil that is very manageable from a 7 lb. rig, especially considering it pushes a 168 grain TTSX @ 3065 fps.

Why is this cartridge not more popular?
I've got one in a Kimber 84M and love it! Too bad they don't chamber it anymore.

What rifle do you have??

300 wsm is a favorite of mine. I’ve used one exclusively for big game for the last 20 years or so. Since I have kids that love to hunt I picked up another several years ago. Seen enough deer/elk/antelope harvested with them that the thought of needing another cartridge has never occurred to me. I’m selling the starter rifles I got for the kids to fund a 3rd.

Have 3 barrels and 2 different rifles in 300 WSM. Used it for F class at 1000yds, it was a laser with the 215 and 230 Bergers. I have taken a few white tails with mine over the years but the rifles are pretty heavy and not for running around with.

I also think the 300 WSM is a sweet spot cartridge... and this is a shameless plug opportunity for the one I have listed in the classifieds right now!

Glad I stumbled across this thread. I recently picked up a Model 70 .300 WSM for $500 from a relative of my MIL. The guy is getting older and was not much of a hunter to start with, and he mentioned it was "barely used" and in great shape. He was not kidding. I looked it over, not a scratch on the stock, barrel is clean and I honestly don't think it has been fired; it looks like it was bought and stored in his safe. I checked the serial number it is from when they released that cartridge in 2003 or so. I definitely got a great deal on it.
I am using Hornady ELD-X 200s and can't wait for elk season....

I've been debating on buying that rifle for a while.

I currently have a .300 WSM Kimber Montana and it shoots fine and is topped with a VX-3 scope that is fine too. For sure lightweight. Upgraded to it from a 7mm Rem Mag Browning A-Bolt that I never could get to group better than 1.5 MOA. I've shot quite a few animals with it.

Think yours would be a nice upgrade though. My son has the Christensen Mesa in 7mm-08 with the VX-5 on it and it is very accurate and nice.

My 300 WSM and 300 Win mag are both Sakos. I love them both and they shoot tight groups. I put a muzzy break on the 300 Win and can shoot several boxes of shells without a sore shoulder or forehead.

It's a good cartridge. My 300wsm xbolt was my most used western hunting rifle for a handful of years. It gets taken out of the safe for 5-10 rounds once every couple years now days. The ballistics (in short action format) aren't better than something with half the recoil. I dont need 180+ grain bullets to cleanly kill anything I hunt for and if I did want that, i have a 7mm that'll shoot 175-180 class bullets with higher BC and sectional density.

The performance was no better than the old Win mag so the best advantage was the short action took a tad off the weight of a rifle for those looking for a slim version. I have one in a Sako Finlite. Also have the bastard child 7WSM that is real hard to find ammo and brass for.
I wanted a 7 SAUM for the longest time, but never bought one. Now that I've had the .300 WSM a while, I'm glad I have it instead.

I had the good fortune of finding not one but two brand new, never fired, 20+ year old stainless flat back Savage rifles chambered in .300 WSM during a Christmas week of scouring gun shops in central TX. I was looking for a "thumper" to use on elk and moose, and I couldn't believe how fortunate I was to find those two rifles. I love the old CRF flat back Savages, and to find one in stainless in that chambering was some of the best luck I've ever had gun shopping. Better yet, I got it for a song, because I knew exactly how long it had been in that shop. Bolt is buttery smooth and the trigger adjusted to 3 lbs. exactly with no creep or overtravel.
