I have started to look at getting a 22 and would like peoples opinions on what they have they would recommend as a quality accurate pistol. So far I'm looking at the Ruger 22/45.

Browning Buck Mark is a nice pistol in the Rugers price range. Best to go to a shop and find one that fits your hand well. Lots of quality options out there but not all of them will fit your hand the same.

It depends on what you want. The Ruger is a hard auto-loader to beat, but my choice is the Single Six from Ruger. It is a totally dependable and accurate six-shooter.

I went through the the same decision a while ago...I got a Ruger single six. Fun little pistol and it will shoot both the 22LR and the 22 Mag. I have had a lot of fun with mine:)

The new S&W Victory is reported to be very accurate and much easier to clean/maintain than a Ruger 22/45. Disassembly is a snap, it's all SS and the price is right.

If you plan to shoot shorts, longs, and long rifle ammo, you should look at a revolver. If you opt for the Ruger single six, you can get another cylinder that shoots 22 magnums (it usually comes with both cylinders).
If you are planning on shooting only 22 lr, the Browning Buckmark, and the S&W Victory are excellent choices. They will not fire the shorter cartridges unless you load them one at a time. S&W used to make a model 41 that was available in 22 short, but they are quite rare and very $$$$$.

Vintage: Colt Woodsman, Hi-Standard or Ruger Mark I in a semi-auto. Ruger single-six, colt frontier, S&W M17 or Kit Gun.

Modern: Buckmark, Ruger 22/45 or MarkIII. In a revolver, look at the SIngle Six and some folks even like the Taurus 22 revolvers as well for plinking and target work.

I'd go rent them all and see what you like the most.

If I was going the semiauto route I'd say the buckmark is probably the best combination of quality and simple design. The Ruger MKIII's and 22/45's are known as Ruger's Cubes for a reason if you detail strip them. Great guns and the largest aftermarket, but they have a pile of small parts. The 22/45's are very top heavy with a steel upper and plastic lower. The new S&W victory is definitely a good option.

Used Single six's can be had fairly cheap, I paid $300 for mine and they are pretty much the benchmark of .22 revolvers. The older S&W kit guns are excellent as are Ruger Bearcats if you have smaller hands.

Great picks in all the above.
I have the Ruger MK and love it, the Single six is great, the Heritage Rough Rider is nice and its cheap (I carry on the trap line), I also recently bought a Walther P22 and I love it too...( my 11yr old has actually laid claim to it..she loves it). Handle them all, then choose.

I got a GSG 1911 .22 a few months ago. It's a fun little pistol that won't break the bank. No problems cycling the high velocity stuff, had a few stovepipes with the lower velocity "target" rounds.

Thanks for all the opinions and insight everyone. Now it's even harder to choose :)

I have a Browning BuckMark Slabside and a Ruger MKII with target barrel. They are both great guns and plenty accurate. I have never had any issues whatsoever with either of them. I would choose a semi-auto over a revolver, but that's just personal preference.

I have both a Ruger Single Six and a Mark III Hunter. I love both and wouldn't give either up. The Single six was the first gun I bought when I turned 21. I went into the sporting goods store with only an ID, thinking I had to wait 3 days to actually buy a gun. I sheepishly had to go get my checkbook after I was nicely informed what the 3 day waiting period really meant after they made the phone calls and paperwork was filled out. If you go the semi-auto route, I would go with the Mark III Hunter or Competition as they have a longer and heavier barrel for accuracy. I really wanted a Competition and waited 3 years to get my hands on a new one. When I did, I didn't like the grips and decided to go with the Hunter. Everyone that I let shoot it loves that gun.
