Wyoming Elk Region W

Wyoming Resident looking for someone with a Wyoming Region W elk tag that might want to go 10-12 miles into the wilderness on horseback for archery or first rifle. This country is heavily populated with Grizzlies. I did this hunt last season solo, without stock, only a few miles in and shot a bull on opening morning. Bit off more than I could chew and rented horses to pack him out. Hadn’t been on a horse but once before, so that was a whole adventure in itself haha. Being in G bear country quartering an elk without someone watching your back is something I’d like to not do again if I can prevent it. I’m looking for someone who wants an adventure and preferably knows their way around stock. I plan on hunting 6-8 days. This is also an area that for a general unit has the potential to produce some real quality bulls. I’m looking for something around the 320” mark unless it comes to the last couple days. I think renting horses when you don't know horses takes more balls than hunting in solo bear country. It least it would for me. Certainly can't say you are afraid to tackle the unknown.

I kinda planned on hunting separate ways in the morning and radioing one another if a bull fell. In the event we were hunting together, I like working bulls as much as I like pulling the trigger… I’m not greedy

I’ve looked into llamas but you can cover a lot more ground hunting horseback rather than hiking. That’s really the only thing pushing me away.

Sounds interesting! Im headed there Oct 2-10 for a hunt around bondurant with an outfitter. I just don't know enough fully to be DIY just yet. When will you be out there? Where in the West will you be?

I think the bigger question here is why is a resident referring to the hunt area by the region name used for non resident tags. as a resident I have never once done that nore have i hunted with any othere resident who did. that is not even on our resident tag map or resident tag season list.

Im not trying to be overly critical of op here, but the non resident region naming thing is a big red flag. Mentioning going this far back on horses would indicate he likely wants to go into a wilderness area to hunt, which is not legal for non resident in wyoming. On top of that, i would not want to be on a trail ride with rented horses with a guy who doesnt know how to run one. Going off away from roads hunting with horses, splitting up, with a guy who has no idea what he is doing with a horse and another who potentially has never been to the area is a recipe for search and rescue involvement. i remember a couple years back an IT guy from denver doing something similar in colorado and ending up being taken off a mountain by search and rescue.

I believe the OP said he was a resident, and he could get a free resident guide license to take up to 2 NR's a year into wilderness legally.

Also, there are lots of excellent elk hunting places in region W that are not wilderness that horses are a huge asset.

It may not be the worst idea to want to take a NR that only has a tag every 4-5 years into your secret elk spot instead of a resident that can hunt every year and start running his soup cooler about it to all his resident buddies.

I have two younger pack/riding horses and have two spots picked out that are non fed wilderness areas, but I dont want to walk in 10-12 miles leading horses. That could turn into 40-60 miles of walking/packing just to get one bull out. Not including that packing hay for 4-5 days (160 lbs of hay). My horses arent conditioned for that at 6 years old. Id rather hunt where I can walk in 3-6 miles and pack some cold beer and steaks.

I don't know...if you're wanting to find a NR, probably doesn't make sense to name a particular unit but rather what the tag says that they get in the mail.

The $? Could be something to that.
