Winchester M70 long action blank canvas... ideas on what to build.

270 or 280AI are great choices. By the numbers the 280AI will win, and it has a lot of great bullet options. But realistically they are splitting hairs.

And although I’m not a personal fan of the M70, a 270 in an M70 action has a lot of panache. Putting a modern “twist” on that with a fast twist barrel would be pretty cool

It would be nice to have a barrel that the newer heavier .277 caliber bullets will stabilize in.

9.3x62 would be fun to play with. To me, the ultimate medium bore for a standard bolt face and ejection port.

A fast twisted 25” 270 would fit nicely on an M70 too.

The usual answers from the usual players. Not wrong, just predictable.
Assuming you do not want to change the bolt face, so gonna stick with .473" rims.

Here are my predictable choices.
I have plenty of 30's and 7mm's. Currently obsessed with 6.5 calibers and 35 calibers.

6.5:
6.5 Weatherby RPM. Kicks ass but components are expensive.
6.5x55 AI - Yes please
6.5-06 - You bet.

35 Cal:
I would love to wildcat the 338 Weatherby RPM up to .358". Same problem as the 6.5 WBY RPM in terms of components.
If you already have the Whelen, then a 35 Brown-Whelen could be interesting. Shoulder moved up .050" and .020" more diameter at the shoulder. A "35 Whelen AI", if you will.

I don't have any barrel burning varmint guns, so a 22-250 or 220 Swift would be a fun add.
