Which inreach plan?

Just got a new garmin with inreach capabilities. Just curious which plan you went with and are you happy with it? Thanks

I’ve had a mini for about 6 or 7years and it cost me $12.00 per month but you can cancel it and then start it back up. The only thing I really want out of it is the SOS. I got into a life or death situation in 2016 without it. Worth every penny.

I keep it on the basic plan and then increase it during hunting season when I expect to text a lot more than normal. If I need to text more when on the basic plan, I just pay for them, it takes a lot of text to get to the $65 plan to make it worth it.

I have basic plan. Text wife when I leave the truck and when back to the truck. Or when I have an animal down.

She then also has my GPS coordinates and can come help pack (depending where I am)

Basic plan and just pay the $0.50 for each extra text. You can send a lot of text messages before it adds up to enough to make the other plans worth it.

Depends on how “in reach” you need to be. I just use the basic plan that I can switch off and pony up if I go over the allowed amount of texts.

Plus there's the $35 annual program fee on the basic plan. But still a good deal.

I do the lowest safety plan. I use the preset messages that don't count against your message count 90% of the time. I generally only have it turned on for one or two months a year.

I used the mid plan of 40 messages/mo. Last year it was called Freedom or something, but the website now says Recreation. I agree with those that say going over on text limit isn't expensive enough to warrant paying for higher plan. Also, the texting service itself isn't the fastest. Even a few of back and forth texts can take 30 minutes to get through all the technological hoops. If basic check-ins are pre programed, that would probably meet most requirements of a single trip.

My wife likes to text me updates about the kids, messages from the kids, updates from home, and just "chat" during down times and when I get back to camp. It was worth it to have the unlimited plan for the 1 month and then just put the plan on hold after I was done with my out of state hunting for the month.

Two years ago I ran into an issue where my transmission crapped out on the exit ramp in Colorado for where we were going to start the trek up the mountain. A trip to the airport (from a friendly local who picked us up on the side of the road) for a rental and then setting up a drop-off to the transmission shop and then we were on our way up the mountain. The unlimited plan definitely payed for itself with all the messages between me and my wife where she was playing middle man with the transmission shop surrounding work to be done, cost, and timeline for having the work wrapped up and passing it all along to me. We actually stayed on the mountain an extra day because the shop had a delay and I was able to get that information by using the messenger an unlimited amount of times. In the overall costs of the hunt, the extra $40 was a drop in the bucket. Don't overthink it.

Do you have a lady back home that you want to small talk with at night in your tent? A wife and kids? Or do you just want the ability to check in and use it for emergencies? If it’s the latter, I have found the Safety plan to be sufficient.
