When to keep or replace a vehichle

Sounds like the truck needs replacing first. I think the other two are fine. And the only reason I'd say to replace the truck is if you think the eye sore is too much.

Otherwise drive it into the ground. Have used trucks gone down in price finally?

200k and down the road they go. Making an exception with my current SUV, as that is being kept for my youngest daughter.

It will last about 2 months of the demolition-derby/high school parking lot, so it’ll be fine for that.

Regarding not wanting two payments in the future- totally makes sense. However, you have to consider the opportunity-cost of the money for payment you’d be making now: if you invest that money, it will likely grow faster than inflation of the cost of the vehicles + interest (which is likely doing down).

While painful to have two payments in the future, you’d be better off rolling with what you have with no payments now.

If you really want to hedge, start making vehicle payments into a money market-type account now so that it’s there waiting for a larger down payment when it comes time to pull the trigger.

My last two trucks were government vehicles. Great deals to be found if you look. And they aren't all that green color anymore. mtmuley

A guy stopped by my jobsite the other day as part of a paving crew. He was nervous to shut off what was left of his 2008 Tundra because he thought it might not restart. It has 470,000 miles on it! It made me feel pretty good about my 2012 Tundra with only 156,000!

Smart way to go about it. Didn't think of doing that two years ago when I replaced mine. Probably should have looked into it, would have saved I'm sure

I hate having two vehichles but I need a truck quite often and the gas would kill me. I think driving the cheaper work car pays off in the end but with insurance and all that sometimes I wonder.
I rocked a car in addition to my truck for a few months. Couldn't make it pencil out, but it was nice not racking up all the miles on my truck.

Salt kills and rust sucks.

Sometimes it does pencil out and other times it doesn't for me. Depending on how you look at it. Im not sure how to put a price in extending the life of the truck by keeping the miles off. Then again I've kept the miles off and the $*)Q!#@$ thing is rusting away, so is that any better?

I’m glad we don’t usually have much rust to deal with around here, that would really suck. I’m not always a Ford fan, but at least you wouldn’t have to worry about body rust, just underneath.
That's what I'm leaning towards for that exact reason. Buddy of mine has a 17 with the aluminum and his is oxidizing and paint is peeling in spots. His is the only one that I've seen do that personally though.

It's sad. I'd rather have to pay attention when driving in the winter vs dealing with a salt that eats steel...

Our snow is a little different than your guys I think with the humidity we don't get powder we get wet heavy soaking snow. Drive on it and it turns to pure ice. Maybe not but I think that's the gist of it.
Bingo.

I still think sand would suffice!

Why does the salt on roads have to happen? mtmuley
Insurance. It is really the most basic answer - more cars per mile of road. Traffic there is bad enough on dry roads. Add a little snow and it locks up. In Montana, ice means a couple of cars in the ditch. In the midwest it might mean a 30-car pile up. Add to that they don't have blue-ribbon trout streams, so people don't really care. It's hard on cars though. Leads to the famous Undercoating upsell from dealers. I'm not sure if that works.

So gas wise between my car and truck at 30,000 miles a year for work at $3 gas for easy figuring. The car saves me $2,700 annually in gas. Bought the car 6 years ago for $10k. I'm not sure what insurance is off the top of my head. But in 5 years my truck would have an additional 150k on it. Not sure how to put that into a value.
