Currently reading “Grizzly Bear Science” by Bruce McLellan. A bit heavy on the science but he breaks it down nicely and adds lots of story. He lived in the Canadian Flathead Valley for 40 or so years trapping, tracking, and studying grizzlies. I have learned so much about bears and come to have a new respect for them. One cool tidbit I learned is on average, during the peak of the berry season, bears are consuming ~20,000 calories a DAY. Nuts.

The Big Sky, AB Guthrie

Seriously disappointed. It's middling at best. Unrealistic plot. To his credit the details, settings, etc, are very good. Main character isn't always the good guy.

I read this one when it first came out. Just got done listening to the audio version last month. I got more out of it the second time. The amount of conservation work done during the "Dirty Thirties" of a Dust Bowl and economic depression is astounding. To think of what they did for wildlife and the future of conservation infrastructure, compared to the piddly stuff politicians fight over today, is hard to reconcile. Much of what we enjoy today can be traced back to this time.

As much as T.R. is deserving the reputation as the President who instituted a conservation ethos in America, his fifth-cousin, FDR, did even more on-the-ground conservation than T.R.

I enjoyed everything, except for the ending. I was disappointed. As others have pointed out, the theme is that man destroys everything that he loves.

I read the first book of the Longmire series. I didn’t care for it. I struggled to finish it. It took forever for the story to develop. I really enjoyed the tv series. My wife says you should never watch the series or movie before reading the book.

Is it? Or is it that some men are truly brutes, still raw wild animals, incapable of functioning in a group/society, ones that are best outcasts or locked up.

I saw very little value in Boone the character or Boone the metaphor.

Listened to Steve Rinella read the Meateater book on the Mountain Men. Was like an endless string of shorts from a podcast interview. Light and entertaining on a long drive down I-5. Much of the material used for researched was books I'd read or listened to already. Looking for a good book on the Hudson's Bay Co. in the PNW and early explorers in the Columbia river area..

I think it’s both. No doubt Boone was a POS.

I tried reading a book about Boone. I found his ethics and character disappointing enough that I didn't finish. Not sure how we made such a hero out of him. By today's rules he'd be a trespasser, poacher, and murderer at minimum.

Different Boone, @Southern Elk and I were discussing the main character of the fictional Big Sky, which is a novel written about the fur-trapping mountain man era of the mid 1800s, particularly the Upper Missouri River country. It has many similarities to Jeremiah Johnson.

I mean, it's not exciting, and in his letters to his children he is not saying anything deep, but that makes sense. I think knowing the context was as interesting as anything. For example, in the first letter he was at war, and a month away from charging up San Juan Hill, and was talking about fun and lighthearted things. He loved his children deeply and valued play and hard work for them. Just a kind of inside look at the guy. Quick and easy read too.
