Back into Dan Flores’ American Serengheti

Refreshing that he is willing to examine all the factors involved in the demise of the bison.

After a whole chapter devoted to the adaptability of the feral horse, I was surprised to see him name them as a not small factor in the crash of the bison.

He still credits market hunting, but not in the ways that you would think.

I do not alway agree with Dan Flores, but I appreciate his deep education and willingness to look at things from all angles.

Currently reading “Grizzly Bear Science” by Bruce McLellan. A bit heavy on the science but he breaks it down nicely and adds lots of story. He lived in the Canadian Flathead Valley for 40 or so years trapping, tracking, and studying grizzlies. I have learned so much about bears and come to have a new respect for them. One cool tidbit I learned is on average, during the peak of the berry season, bears are consuming ~20,000 calories a DAY. Nuts.
