A few of my buddies went to New Mexico a couple months ago and each got a nice bull elk. I had to ask what it cost for the guided hunt. It's way out of my budget. I was talking with a Fish and Game Warden I know fairly well a couple weeks ago and asked him what the fine was for shooting one of the Tule Elk that are protected but run all over us. He said it could be up to 5k. Hmm, that's cheaper than the guided hunt in New Mexico. He then added that it's also a misdemeanor punishable by up to 1k fine and possibly 6 months in jail! I said that's still cheaper than a guided hunt, and they aren't going to stick me in jail at my age. His reply was. " Oh God, please don't do that!" I just giggled at him and told him not to worry,,,

Do it, make sure to post it on the gram and mention all the brand name gear that contributed to your success. Checks will be rolling in like Publishers Clearinghouse.

The high road is seldom cheap, never crowded.

Is there any Tule hunting anymore in California?

Yes and CDFW has been expanding opportunities over the past 5 years. There three different categories, our standard big game draw, the SHARE program (private land access via a separate random draw) and the PLM pool which is much smaller, but that's where folks who will pay sheep hunting money to get their elk/North American Slam.

Makesure to film this hunt and post on YouTube with a caption like "BIG ELK taken by 4K RIFLE AND SITKA IN NM"

Hmm, I didn't know the Share program had elk hunts.

I've done that math a time or two. Another point is that the very best hunting that money can buy is for unpressured animals that aren't particularly wary. There's not much more to taking one home from the very best places than having access, equipment and good marksmanship. Hunting skill is well down the list if it's even on it. May as well just take a picture for all that's worth in sport.

That’s why I was curious. I didn’t know if people were still able to get a Super Slams or whatever other slams there are out there.

Ha, that fish and game warden has seen it all.

On the guided hunt cost problem: Wyoming cow elk hunts are actually significantly more affordable than New Mexico bull hunts and the tags are easy to draw. You get the real wilderness experience without the premium bull tag price.

We have a guided cow elk hunt listed on Xploreum (xploreum.io). 3 days horseback into the Washakie Wilderness of Shoshone National Forest, 12 miles in, small group, meals included, November dates available September 30 through December 20. Licensed outfitter with a special use permit. Considerably cheaper than whatever your buddies paid in New Mexico and no misdemeanor risk.

I'm one of the co-founders of Xploreum. If you want to book one of our Elk listings, I can set you up with a $500 discount. If you have enough folks going with you it'll be super affordable. Happy to share more details if you DM me.
