The big 18 and adult things?

A lot of people were working other jobs. Most of which paid less than Unemployment unfortanately. Idk why nobody ever thought of this? They should've just went to McDonald's and raised a family on that.
If that is what it takes to provide for my family, that is what needs to be done.

When you choose to raise a family, your job is to provide.

Thanks for the rosy prediction, Sunshine! :)
Reality sucks. He might as well learn that now. The kid wants to start working and earn $100k. No way that is happening with some more training and education. A lot more. Start learning how to repair electrical board circuits or recycle solar panels and batteries. Thinking about the future will be far more beneficial than listening to a bunch of old guys tell you they would have invested in a Roth, which didn’t exist until 1997 and could just as easily be gone in 2027.

I got nothing, don't listen to me.
I have gone with and against most every bit of mostly solid advice here.

You are miles ahead of the crowd just asking and maybe listening to various people.
Don't be afraid to think for yourself.

In the end you wake up and you are you.

I just thank my lucky stars.

Totally. Doesnt mean it's gonna add up at the end of the day. Most the guys I know did work other jobs at about 1/3 the pay with a family with no insurance. Oh and trying to find said job was a breeze considering it was the biggest economic downturn 2nd only to the great depression. Jobs were just popping up everywhere, ya know. I dont know a single person during that time who had access to any kind of a job that turned it down. Doesn't mean that job paid the bills for a family. And to think they could've still been investing supplemental income in that situation is laughable at best.

About a year ago I had to redo a service to a house because the couple bought a really neat place that had built in the 60s turn out houses built in the 60s didn’t plan on charging a Tesla and Rivian that’s just one house most people don’t have any actual understanding what it takes to make these future plans happen.

Should keep you busy for the rest of your career. Probably not going to last long enough to keep him busy for his.

Do something like this as often as you reasonably can….

There’s lots of good advice about planning for retirement and career choices but recognize those are means to an end, tools and a metaphorical vehicle to get you where you want to go. Being at the place where you want to be when you get there is the rub and not a lot of folks on here are speaking directly into that.

Three cups of coffee on the bank of the river and think about this thread and life and what I would tell my 18 year old self…

1. Life contains a lot of bullshit, hard work and difficulty despite your best plans and good intentions. Develop an authentic faith or philosophy that gives you strength and perspective to not be overwhelmed when that happens.
2. You’re going to be a similar but different person in approximately ten year intervals. Phases of life are real and who you and what you want ten years from now and ten years from then are probably similar but not exactly the same as what you want now. Don’t diminish your enjoyment of today by deferring all that you want until tomorrow, but don’t screw yourself out of a good today ten years from now by being undisciplined in your choices now.

3. Learn to know yourself before you try to learn to know a woman. Knowing what you can adapt to and what you cannot change without being someone who isn’t you is very important and only comes with honesty and time.

4. When you are attracted to a woman look at her through the lens of perspective that asks yourself if you want to wake up beside her for the rest of your life? If the answer is “hell no” then definitely dont look at her with the intention of going to sleep with her in the first place.

5. The period from 18-25 is probably the most consequential and dynamic in terms of making decisions that you will spend the next 40-60 years living out. It’s that way whether it freaks you out and keeps you from making any decisions or whether you say “screw it” and make decisions with no consideration of the consequences. It’s also that way if you make the best choices you know how to make

6. Having kids is probably the most life changing part of being alive. Finding a life partner is consequential but children will affect your day to day life experience and choices to an even greater degree.

7. Find happiness and contentment to the best of your ability in the small joys and moments. They’re often as enjoyable on an individual basis as the big things and certainly more rewarding when considered in the cumulative. You’ll be happier in your own experience and more enjoyable for others to be around. No one enjoys a crusty old bastard except for perhaps the crusty old bastard and he definitely doesn’t enjoy being around other crusty old bastards. Don’t be a crusty old bastard.

This may have been said in the prior ten pages, but register to vote. And then at least very briefly read about the positions of the major candidates. You will feel like a proud, productive and informed citizen when you pull that lever having done this even if your candidate loses.
