Your right. A pension should be a bonus not the deciding financial factor. Most people wont make it at the same place to see a full pension. Lot of places close on people, or they need to move at some point. Look at how many people get career fatigue because they stay just for the pension.

Seriously though, recognize that you can’t have everything that you want in life. So figure out what you really want, make a mental and literal list of them in order of priority to you along with your most reasonable understanding of what it takes to achieve or support keeping that priority.

Identify those wants that are incompatible with each other, choose the one you want more and accept the consequences.

For 18 year old man, try not to die or get arrested. Pick a path and try to remain faithful to it. Don’t knock up any chicks.

If you are looking at a physical long term job I would look at becoming a lineman. It pays well and offers a fair amount of job security in an a largely uncertain and changing job market. A lot of co-ops still have pensions. It's important to be smart financially and it will make your life much easier, but it will not replace the people and experiences that will make life happier. It looks different for everyone. Remember that it is the people in our lives that bring happiness not things.

Common sense goes along ways and common sense tells me that the guys that are older are gonna have more sense then me and I should probably listen. So far not dead and not arrested and I dont have no pregnant chick's

It seems the industry standard is floating around 15-18% for lineman…wish my company was at a match/auto contribute of that rate I’d rather have a 401k so when I leave this earth my kids will have whatever is left
