This country is heading into an odd direction. I don’t think it’s a good one. And there’s not much anyone can do about changing the course I fear.
If you weren’t paying attention before I think everyone should probably start

No one is perfect. George Washington owned slaves, Abraham Lincoln sentenced 37 Souix to be hung, the largest mass execution in our country's history. Even the great Theodore Roosevelt was flawed, with less than ideal views and policies towards Native people. We all know how critical he was in developing and implementing what we now know as the North American Conservation model. This specific issue has more to do with the statue than the man. As a Blackfeet I am against honoring figures such as Columbus, but I am OK with will even support the honoring of Roosevelt, provided we are honoring that acts worth honoring and not the negative. That is not to say we should forget the negative, we just shouldn't celebrate it.

Wow, that thread grew quickly. I have to say, I've seen this statue many, many times. That stretch of Central Park West is one of my secret parking hot spots when I stay in Manhattan for work.
The actual artistry of the statue is pretty impressive and Teddy R definitely earned some respect from us. However, this statue, in this day and age, really looks tone deaf, I've always thought so. It really is a regal looking white guy on a horse, leading the way while his "lessers" walk behind him, on foot. That's what the statue feels like. If there were a statue of TR there, by himself, I don't think we'd be hearing any calls for its removal. I think removing it is probably a good move.

While I can appreciate the art involved in statue's the whole idea of statues, in particular those "honoring" a person are about as ridiculous as it gets.

There isn't a single person that learns jack chit about history from looking at a statue. You learn history, by studying history, by understanding history. A statue doesn't tell the story or explain history one bit.

IMO, mount Rushmore is an eyesore, I'd rather it was in its natural state, the wildlife probably would as well. Never have seen it in person, probably never will, and don't care if I don't.

Monuments are a bit different, IMO, because they usually have some interpretive stuff to accompany them...a story to tell, you know actually history rather than glorifying a person. If I were to never see another statue of a person again, I wouldn't be out anything.

I'm inclined to agree. I'd rather see statues honoring groups, or other things. I don't know anything about its story, but since you're in Wyoming, I'll throw out that I freakin' love that statue/sculpture of the eagle in Casper. I'd rather stick that in front of a museum.

BLM and antifa are Communist front organizations with the goal of collapsing American society and Capitalism. That’s the goal. It’s no more complicated than that. BLM has formally stated their no: 1 priority is getting President Trump out of Office by any means they deem necessary including violence. What can be done? When good men stand by and do nothing we know how it’s going to pan out eh. BLM should be viewed as the “righteous validation” and antifa as the Brownshirt thugs if you will. They’re the useful idiots; the cannon fodder for the Cause. It’s going to be a hot summer of discontent I fear.

Before this post I knew nothing about this statue, but I have a feeling it isn't so much the figure of Roosevelt. It's the statues he's flanked by that chaps peoples hide.

That's how I took it. It would be good if they just commissioned and a placed a new statue with Roosevelt and those flanking him in a way that doesn't seem likes he's subjugating them, as the argument goes.

The thread is about a specific statue in New York, it's relevant to hunting because the statue is of Roosevelt.

I disagree with you on whether any of those statements are fact. I assert that your phrasing is incendiary and hyperbolic whether you mean it to be or not.

Both had complex relationships with people of color. TR was a trailblazer and endured no end of slight for having people like Booker T Washington to the Whitehouse. Meanwhile, FDR's activities outside of internment often garnered him the epithet mentioned in the poem about TR, along with the war.

While statues may be the current trigger for both sides in this conversation, the complexity of it all gets lost unless we have the audacity to listen to the other side, and find the reasons why they believe why they do.
