My son wanted to fill a swan tag so we headed out to find a swan. There are some potholes that hold a lot of swans at times if one knows where to look. Seems like today every little pond or pothole or creek bottom had swans on it.

This wasn't a long drawn out affair. Mostly spot swans and sneak up and shoot a swan. Anyway he filled his tag with a "big ass bird"

Congrats. Will he have it mounted? I assume that they are edible, but have no idea how they would be prepared or how they taste. Any experience with this?

Nicely done! I have a tag as well but I'm not sure when I'm going to go. It's tough to pull me away from big game and roosters.

Nice Swan! I heard that the young ones, which are gray in color are pretty good to eat. The older birds I have heard are pretty tough. Mine have gone the taxidermist way, so I haven't tasted one myself. Good job on the big bird!

Congratulations on the swan. Those things are fun to hunt. We've always set up between a lake holding them and fields they're feeding in and decoy them. Pretty easy but tons of fun.

They are similar to geese in their taste. I just make burger out of the breast.
My wife has one mounted, flying, from '92, and it still looks good.

Way to go on the swan, that is high on my bucket list. I hope to get down to nc next year and get one if I can draw a tag.

Nice. How do they taste compared to geese?

I've never eaten one, but I tried a flying pose mount on one years ago. The meat looked real dark, a little darker than a goose, more like a mallard. The mount actually turned out okay, but the lab got a hold of it when I had it down to clean it and that was the end of that. Kind of funny....kind of! It was a big mature bird though. The gray ones are immature and supposed to be better eating.

Love swan hunting, Been doing it the last 5 or 6 years filled every time. Not a whole lot one can do but spot then sneak. None the less they are still fun to hunt. Should have mounted mine from 2 years ago had an 84 in wing span but i dont have a wall that big. Congrats on it looks like a nice one, let me know how you cook it i never really did find a good way to cook them all taste the same. surprisingly not much meat on those big birds.
